Why aren't liberals happy?

Liberals aren't happy because Hip Hop and Hipster popularity are fading...yep...elevating illiteracy and goofiness to an art form is dying like a dessicated bar hide....:D

For my part, I never could stand hip-hop or rap.

You're not meant for it. But it's not a big deal at all. I'm not meant for klezmer or polka, either.

At least those are forms of music, such as they are. Rap is . . . impressive as lyric poetry, but music it is not.

I guess if your philosophy on music is that it requires a melody, then fair enough. We can agree to disagree.

But to you then also not consider a drum a musical instrument?

How so? Didn't read it. Waste of time. The initial point is still valid regardless, and I'll probably post a number of variations on it in the future.
Vette and Jimbo are engaged in mutual masturbation and the rest are laughing at you. Par for course.

Hip Hop was at it's peak in the 90's.

98% of it is shit now.

lil wayne? Give me a fucking break.

My vanity thread has more posts than this. This isn't taking off by any stretch of the imagination.

Is it possible that liberals are sad because 2012 was supposed to be an epic fight between the forces of good and the forces of evil and instead the forces of good pretty much gave up and went home? It's like Star Wars had ended with Luke staying on Dagobah because Vader was going to use his colon for boot scrubber.

It's a form of music that has a narrative base that's every little bit as legit as rock and jazz and country and every other piece of music that uses lyrics and voice and writing as instrument. I'm afraid that forty-plus years in the ever-evolving spectrum of American music overrules your opinion of it not being music, but it's still okay to not like it.

4 pages? I guess you never know which threads are going to take off. :D

See? Don't ever let anyone tell you that you ain't a winner, Renny.

I was gonna post. . .then Zoomie showed up and well I'll dumb following THAT unless I come up with something truly truly outrageous.

My basic criterion is, it is music if you can enjoy it without knowing the language of the lyrics, if any.

How many people really enjoy rap in that sense, I wonder?

And we will turn every one into a debate on the artistic merits of rap, or something. You're welcome.

I think if THAT'S your criteria there aren't a lot of musicians period. I can occasionally enjoy. . .J-Pop whatever they are always playing on anime without understanding it but that's because you don't need to know the lyrics. They all come down to "My friends and I will overcome, gonna kick your ass, go go go." I imagine I wouldn't hate Mariachi if I had the first clue what they were saying.

Honestly once you get into music WITH lyrics understanding it is usually a pre-req to enjoying it. At least it is for my narrow minded ass.

Just curiuos since I sometimes miss things. Did anybody actually accuse Vette of racism or did he just know what he clearly meant when he talked about hip hop and hipsters (are those things even related?) and felt the need to clarify that he has lots of black musicians that he enjoys?

For the record if Polka qualifies as music so does the labor pains of a cat.

Edit: I kid. Not really.

Also honestly I'd sooner argue the artistic merits of Super Mario than rap on most days. I'm not a huge fan, I just don't not like it. My younger brother is fairly talented for example. I don't listen to much modern rap, but honestly I can't think of much written after 2005 that I listen to much.

You mean this shit doesn't rise to the level of Porgy and Bess???? How could you???:D

I like the way you walkin’ if you walkin’ my way
I’m that red bull, now let’s fly away
Let’s buy a place with all kinds of space
I’ll let you be the judge and I’m the case
I’m Gudda Gudda, I put her under
I see me with her, no Stevie Wonder
She don’t even wonder, cause she know she bad
And I got her, n*gga. Grocery bags

Oh, it's better than Porgy & Bess -- as poetry, but not otherwise. ("I'm that red bull, now let's fly away" is rather more creative than "Summertime, and the livin' is easy." But it's only the latter I might catch myself singing.)

No doubt you'd love this shit pile:

Nicki Minaj, “Stupid Hoe”

You a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (x3)
You a stupid hoe, (yeah) you a, you a stupid hoe
You a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (stupid, stupid)
You a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (stupid, stupid)
You a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (stupid, stupid)
(stupid, stupid)

Well . . . it has its merits, but it's derivative. Lacks the original vision of "Shake that ass, bitch, and let me see what you got!"

Have you heard Epic Rap Battles of History?

Also, I listen to music exclusively for the lyrics. I am the exact opposite of Oreo, so my music taste is kind of eclectic. My mp3 player confuses people. If I like the message, I like the music. I can enjoy the same song sang by NIN or Cash. Because it's the same song.
