What do people in high school fight about?

I'm working on a story that involves two eighteen year old high school seniors. I picture them having petty fights, but can't really work out the dumb things they fight about. Any ideas?

Are they the same sex or not?

it might be love or it might be a Romeo and Juliet thing they have been brought up to hate each other but love finds a way.

From what I remember...

expensive clothes vs cheap clothes
studying vs partying
good teachers vs bad teachers

and, when we were in our last year, right before graduation, we were buying special t-shirts for the entire class, and ofcourse that led to heated discussions about colors, prints, and prices.

the obvious choice would be boys.

If it's two girls, they're fighting for the same boy. If it's a boy and a girl, they're fighting because whether they're dating or not, it makes one jealous to see the other one look at another person.

most of the fights i got into in school were spontaneous. we'd just rub each other the wrong way for awhile and then snap. there never was a good reason besides anger.

social status is another big factor. rich kids and poor kids shouldn't hang out together. too much arrogance and too much jealousy for some people.

or, at least thats my experience.

What do they fight about? Anything. Everything. No matter how petty it is, they can argue about it. Trust me, nothing is to farfetched for a high school arguement. :)

In this order . . .

Boys, BOys, BOYs, BOYS!!!
Clothes, perfume, accesories
Grades, grades, grades, grades
Clique (rather than social) status

Maybe they could be cheerleaders; tons to pettiness to draw from there.

Boys are always a choice

So, you're proposing that we instead have one school for the rich kids and one for the poor kids? Or just seperate classes within one chool?

Can you say "class difference"???

yes. i can also say class warfare. it has more umph.

and i was proposing no such thing. you did. i was making a statement about some of the reasons kids fight in school. everywhere i've ever lived the poor kids hang out with the poor kids, rich kids hang out with rich kids, middle class kids hang out with middle class kids. it's not quite that black and white, but i believe its fairly accurate.

and i'm poor kid, so i'm not being a snob here. i'm just stating my experience.

lets not fight.

Sorry if I got a little edgy there. I didn't like the way it sounded. I'm for mixing people up, so they can "play together", and perhaps, in the best of all worlds, begin to realize that there are differences and injustice in this world. People only hanging out with their own kind will only lead to a "we and them"-mentality.

i agree and i've tried to hang out with people outside of my class, but it can be hard. especially when the rich bastards don't understand that you don't have any money! grrrrrrrrrrr!

don't mind me. i'm just bitter.

another reason to argue could be music:

old school Heavy Metal vs. New Metal
east cost rap vs. west cost rap.
Heavy Metal vs. Hip Hop

or what about sports ?
Tyson vs. Holyfield

many NASCAR fans argued about Jeff Gordon vs. Dale Earnhardt Sr. (but Dale Sr. died on 18th February 2001)
but it could be like that .... one person likes Tony Stewart, Eminem or Mike Tyson .... the other person hates Tony Stewart, Eminem, Mike Tyson.

This is off topic, but: I once saw a report: A guy fired a guy at another guy in a restaurant. They both didn't know each other. The reason for the attack was, that the victim wore a "Jeff Gordon" T-Shirt ....

It could be like that on this high school. One person wears a Jeff Gordon t-shirt. A person who dislikes Gordon sees that and starts to argue ..... "
Or this person wears baggy pants like all this Hip Hop guys .... and some others start to laugh about it ...

Exactly my thoughts, which is why I need ideas. :)

It's a couple, so I'm thinking a lot of stuff like...."I know I saw you looking at so-and-so. How could you think they're prettier than me?"
And..."Why didn't you call me back last night?"

another obvious thing to argue about: politics .....

just look at the corrent situation. Some people support Bush some are against him. Some people think that the war is o.k. others think that the war is bad ....

but: DON'T TURN THIS INTO A WAR DISCUSSION THREAD ......

All of these you've mentioned are great examples of a high school couple's fight. In fact, I've lived them all in the past. :)

So, how do the fights fit into play with your story? :)

From my experience...whether or not listening to nysnc is lame
How low low-rise jeans should be and whether or not the thong should show.
Why they shouldn't be allowed to drive before 16

They also like to complain about lame teachers, graduation requirements, and where the party should be that weekend.

There are, in fact, some very good conversations and such that go on, but you wanted the petty stuff

That's HIGH SCHOOL fights? I've heard 30+ couples argue like that.

People can be so childish...

Yeah, I think this could add some fire.

Maybe this 2 teenagers (let's say that both are girls, so that we can have a cat fight :D ) are totally different. For example: One girl could be a fan of Rave or maybe Hip Hop and Rap. And the other girl loves Heavy Metal or Gothic.

Just imagine: There is this Raverchick, dressed in hip, colourful clothes, with neon green hair ... and on the other side, there is the Gothic Girl, dressed totally in black, with pitch black hair ....

Playing on the above post, they could be two average dressing teens with differing views on goths/punks/etc. One could be from the "goths are just expressing themselves" camp and the other is of the "goths are whiney mimes" opinion. Maybe the one girl started hanging out with a girl from another "group". In my high school at least (Stayed behind a year. Dont ask), this cliq stuff is cause for a fair share of drama.
