I'm not talking abut SciFi or other random weirdness that could be accepted.

I'm talking about stuff that in no way could possibly ever be believed. The nerdy guy with the insanely fire hot, gorgeous beauty of a wife that will do anything, anywhere, any time with anybody and let him watch and there won't be any problems or risks of any mind. All smiles and happy happy.

That's why I stopped scribbling because even I didn't believe it.

It would be more believable if she did all those things with him, unless he merely wants to watch.

I hate to bring in some reality here, but I suspect this guy had some serious bucks (maybe not Jeff Bezos level) in order to land her in the first place. That brings in those issues of reality: what are the chances that she will sneak in some bad boy toys in on the side? Also, what happens in twenty years or so when she's not so insanely fire hot any more? Even if she was an ironclad pre-nup, he's going to sneak in some bad girl toys in on his side. Or she may wind up like the late Ivana Trump, who apparently did get some post-Donald dollars. Her personal life after that was kind of messy, with two Italian boyfriends/husbands who didn't last forever.

Still, all in all, not a bad life and a good subject for a heavily fictionalized story. Sorry, I digressed more than a bit. But yeah, there are some stories in there if you want to follow them to conclusions.

In a prior wife, there was a guy in my circle who was an average joe, Jerry, but was scrawny and balding, with slouched shoulders and the world's worst attempt at a moustache. He weas nothing special in terms of money - a mechanic who ended up self-employed, but small time.

His wife was a blonde who would have made Marilyn Montoe envious. everyone wondered what she saw in him. All the "players" tried to hit on her - she would just laugh at threir antics and go home with Jerry.

It must have been the moustache rides.

I knew one married couple... He was a racist, homophobic, extremely fat, absolute cunt of a character. He unapologetically flew actual swastikas from the ute he took to work as a tradie, until the ban. Now he's usurping the Eureka flag.

She, was a petite, skinny, blonde gal who volunteered at the local homeless shelter (which he hated), the local Salvos (which he hated), and the hospital (which he hated). She was a magazine model, and championed working with some disabled models in the local area.

Somehow, they ended up with three kids, and twenty years of happy marriage, thus far. And I do mean happy - anyone gets exasperated with him and asks why she's with him, she gives a shy little smile to wherever he's wandered off to, and says she has her reasons.

The nerd is a smart guy in the foreign languages department. He's a cunning linguist.

You meant to say, "In a prior life?" Depending on how you measure it, mechanics can make decent money. A really good deal is if one can get a government job, like at a public works department or a transit authority. But like most blue-collar jobs, it's tougher work than it might appear to outsiders. Engines are very greasy, dirty objects for one thing. And the possibility of injuries is always there, although it's probably not as dangerous as some other fields (mining or construction, say).

So how is this Jerry and family doing now, if you still know about them? It sounds like this was a while ago.

I like plausibility in my stories even if they are SF and fantasy. Writers have to follow rules to not tick off readers. Things like literal magic appearing in a hard SF story with no explanation, for example. Then there are the erotic stories where a frigid wife goes from dowdy nightdresses to pulling a train in the course of a single afternoon. I try to populate my stories with real people and the possible.

I didn't get my point across, but I'm not sure how to modify, clarify .....

The last post above may have been closest, but there was Jessica Hahn ... not a single afternoon for the evolution, but still.

I have to admit, I too like some realism when reading stories.

That said, I also find it odd at times when people overly question things they deem "unrealistic." I mean its everyone's right to have their opinion, but I just keep coming back to how some movies can clearly be unrealistic, but we all buy it because its part of the entertainment.

Case in point. Super hero movies. Yes, yes, they try to explain it as aliens or scientific breakthroughs. But in reality, we currently don't know of such aliens, nor are some of the science actually possible. But yet for the sake of the movie, we allow ourselves to go with it.

Yet, a man whom some may think is incapable of attracting a "beautiful" woman .... is unrealistic? Perhaps in a lot of cases unlikely, improbably, etc. But way more realistic than a flying man that can shoot rays from his eyes.

(And a word of apology here if I have offended anyone. It is not my intent to be rude or argumentative ... its just really a thought that has often come into my head, as I have seen this "not realistic" comment made a lot when reviewers have written about a strong female character in a books/movie.)

OTOH, I think that what a fair number of people mean when they say "It's unrealistic" is "it lacks verisimilitude". And a lack of verisimilitude can be deadly to a story. (Like the above example of magic in a hard sci-fi story).

Yes I guess I can see that.

(And again, I hope the OG did not think I was trying to be rude. I feel like I should apologize again.)

When there is a disconnect, like the example of "literal magic appearing" ... with no explanation as to why ... then I can see why there might be a question. Perhaps a plot hole exists.

And I also agree, that when a story has a high chance of unlikelihood, or when something is stated in a way that makes the supposedly "unreal" seem real (or verisimilitude if you will), then yes it can be distracting. But if written well, perhaps having some context, then it would not seem so strange. Perhaps that is what is being gotten at.

(Is "Perhaps being gotten at," a proper sentence?)

For me, that example wouldn't really be an issue; I figure that they're together because they have the same or compatible kinks and/or other reasons that don't need to be brought into the story, like that they have kids or whatever.

She loves wacky tabbacky and he grows a weed garden in his basement?

When it comes to social interactions, what's realistic/unrealistic is sometimes cultural dependent. However, pointing that out usually go down the rabbithole and ends up with the person pointing it out labeled as racist (which admittedly is valid at least half the time if not more).

For a bland enough example: loyalty vs justice. There are cultures that value the former over the latter, and vice versa. Muddling the matters further is that cultures tend to be multi layered, which means you can have a culture that claims to value justice, and then shits on whistle blowers and defectors from the evil organizations.

As writers, the difficultly lies in explaining all that stuff in a seamless manner without resorting to infodump.

On a side note, one thing that is often in erotica but not in real life is how healthy the various characters in story are, while meanwhile in real life you have people taking prescription from childhood and that's the considered to be the baseline norm.

Yeah, too unrealistic to have that story idea in this forum for one reason.
You have her doing it willingly.
Have him forcing her or letting his friends gang rape her and it will fit right in here.

Think Dan Hedaya and Jean Kasem as Nick and Loretta Tortelli

The wife of radio host Casey Kasem is desperate to become a reality TV ...

With Loretta doing Norm and Cliff on the pool table while the rest of the cast watches.

(And not becoming a whacked out goofball later in life).

The writing mantra when writing about this stuff is... because reality is often far more unbelievable than fiction sometimes, its okay to write about, it just takes far more explaining why it is happening, so it is more believable to the reader. In other words, be prepared to make a lengthy back story explanation the more outlandish the story theme is.

Here is an example. On a different topic on this forum we were discussing being naked at work and so I tried to write a story regarding how that might plausibly be carried out. In that story I had the company being in terrible straits, the female CFO cooking the books, and finally going to foreign Japanese investors for an operational loan. Since her grandfather started the company, the stakes for her were really high in doing anything to keep the family business going.

So, I made up a fake Japanese business custom where traditionally to show humility, honesty and transparency, when begging for money, the borrower in a particular part of Japan, did so fully nude. Considering the Japanese culture has Nyotaimori and other nude practices that are different than other cultures, it COULD be a practice there, so I went with that. Whether or not I was successful is undetermined I admit, but it took a fair amount of words to get to that point. Its far more probable than had I just wrote about a woman that decided to strip down and get naked at work one day.

But a writer also has to understand that the more outlandish the theme, the more readers will reject it. In my example, most woman would just say, "I'd collect unemployment first". As a writer I understand that, but also understand everyday stuff is also boring. Sometimes it is just best to read about a fantasy and not actually do it. But it takes writers to have something to read!
