The video game thread

Sorry, I had to do it. I've just got this hunch that I'm not the only one out there with the gaming habit. So, I'm wondering if anyone else plays them on a regular basis. And, if you do, what system, what games? Are you a Sims junkie? Role-playing addict?
Personally, Playstation 2 is my drug of choice, and rpg's are my favorite entree.
You and Drpecker need to hook up. He's into rpg's heavy. The little fucker can figure the game out in 48 hrs. or die tryin!

NFS HP does look really good, I think I played something similar to it on the PSX.

*grumbles*

I think i'm going to quit my job. I'm tired of being treated like i don't know anything. God forbid a woman know anything about a fucking video game.

I wouldn't say that

I know some women who are ,not only know more but are better players, I know I get my ass kicked often enough by my so called friends !!

No, don't quit, challenge them to a game of their choice on one of the shops machines ;).

That's a heck of an idea LD! lol

By the way, behold the power of the Xbox.. About 24 hours of music saved.. plus games.. (including six saved replays on NFL 2K3 and two replays on NBA 2K3 that are 100 blocks each)

Can a PS2 do that? :D

Is it still at 50,000 blocks?

Hell yeah! 50K plus.

My games total 820 blocks, My music is at 95,574. So the way I see it there is at least 150 thousand blocks of memory.. If not more. And it's not as if the sound quality of this music is bad... It's like a CD is playing. I'd like to know how the encode the music for storage... It must not take much space for each song.

A 4 minute mp3 at 128 bps is about 2.8 megs. - If you were to take the 24 hours and devide it up into 4 minute songs you'd get 360 songs (I actually have 425 saved) - 360 times 2.8 is about one full gig of memory.

One site I go to has the Xbox listed at 8 gig of memory.

168 hours worth of music anyone? :D

btw.. not that I am bashing any of the other consoles.. But I didn't see anything next to "Hard Drive Memory" under PS2 or GC.

I am also trying to figure out what the heck an "emotion engine" is.. When I find out I'll get back to you all. :D

*coughs* someone needs to check their MP3 files... a 4 minute song at 128Kbps works out at nearly 4meg, in fact... this is the amount a 3:55 song has - 3764139 bytes (C+P'd from winamp, so :p).

So basically... you need to add about an extra 1 meg for each song... so you have a little more than previously thought :D.

But remember the simple thing:

The console doesn't make it sell, the games however, do. As it stands, the PS2 has a good all round quality, it has games for the kids AND the adults, X Box is really made for the adults, and the GC is really made for the kids.

Hence the PS2 sells well, as it has a corner on a majority of the market. As it stands, I don't see many good X Box games (don't dare mention those sport titles again, I hate sport, and more importantly, I'm pretty sure those games are available on other systems, Project Gotham Racing is good, yes, but seeing a sit's a revised MSR, I'll play that :p. Halo... I didn't enjoy... haven't enjoyed much X Box stuff to be honest).

My bad.. I thought all my mp3's were at 128.. Turns out the one song I used for an example ("Take It Back" by Swollen Members) was 96.

So yes you are right LD.

How does 120 hours of music sound? :D

And I won't get into weither or not Xbox has quality games... Apparently you don't think so and that's fine. I tend to disagree. I also won't disagree that for some - like yourself - it's all about the games.

Myself, the quality of games and the number of games available was one factory of many. I also read reviews of who had the better DVD picture, asked owners of both systems what they thought were pros and cons to their system, rented both for a week at a time to check them out myself...

A pro to getting a PS2 was the number of games available.. a con was I'd have to keep buying memory card after memory card for each game. Xbox has better graphics game and DVD wise, but I'd have to put down another 50 bucks to be able to play DVD's unlike PS2..

It just comes down to what the individual is looking for in a system.

And how in the world could you not like Halo?! Even I liked Halo and if you ask anyone who knows me well, I am brutal at those kind of action games. :p

Sorry, but I've seen the sexbox crash one too many times to put any real faith in it. But NHL Hitz is great. Good physical hockey.

Wow...a lot has happened since I last checked...yesterday.
RPG's do rock, sorry Eagle, though I am glad you finished the boat mission. If you need help saving lance, ask me...I came up with my own fool-proof strategy:D
Pez, I'm sorry about your job...try to stick with it though if you can.
Well...Xbox does suck, as we've all seen proven here...maybe when it gets some good games...I mean, here they're selling it with sega gt 2002 and jet set radio future...all for $200..do you see ps2 for $100? No, because sony doesn't need to put product off the shelf that badly. I'm sorry, but it's the plain truth.

Actually as game systems go Xbox is number one on the market. The only reason PS2 sells more, is because it got hyped up. There are more games for PS2. But if you were going out to buy the better system, I'd tell you to buy the Xbox then. PS2's are known for malfunctioning and for not having sharp graphics. The Xbox hardly malfunctions and has excelent graphics.

But..like I said before, I'm only a woman. What do I know about gaming...

well Lion... ya see, it's a console, it's made for games, hence the gameplay IS the number 1 factor, if I wanna play DVD's, I'll use my PC :p.

On the subject of the X-Box... it's actually going quite cheap now over this side of the water. I think it's around the same price as the PS2 now, with 2 free games.

Now.. on the subject of the PS2 having worse graphics... *points at Ratchet & Clank, and then at Burnout 2* I see no bad graphics (we've had them running on our PS2 at work as demos).

Also not heard of a PS2 malfunctioning over here yet. *shrugs*

Now, don't get me wrong, I like the look of ALL the new consoles (even the GBA has sparked interest). However, I'd much rather get a PS2 right now, as it has so many more games I want to play, here's a small list:

SD: Shut Your Mouth (out today... some dumb retailer sold it early)
Ratchet & Clank (g/f's a massive Insomniac games fan :D)
Vice City (Okay, I admit I wanna give it a shot)
GT 3

and there are others... but the game I want to play the most out of all right now HAS to be... Kingdom Hearts.

I mean.. sure it's Disney, but so what? It has Sephiroth, Cloud and other FF characters... and from all the hype I've heard of it over in the states, it definatly owns. I have to play that game.

Also Pez, here's how I decide what to tell the customers about the consoles and what to buy if they ask.

GC - More aimed towards the younger kids, with games like mario, however has some games an adult would like.

X Box - Definatly aimed for the adult gamer, not many kids games on the Box.

PS2 - Good all rounder, and has such a massive list of titles available, that it's not going to run dry for a long time.

Obviously it's all personal choice, but the few games I want on the X Box, and GC, are far less than the games I want on the PS2 (although... I DO envy X Box owners in that they can use their own music in some games...)

But yeah, it's always personal choice, and I'd never condemn anyone for saying they like a specific console better... the only ones I'd ever condemn are those that say "such and such a console is complete crap, all the games suck, don't ever buy it" simply because they prefer a different genre than is the norm on that console.

*shrugs*

The best thing... is when you have say a PS2, a mate has an X Box, and another mate has a GC, then you can all switch computers at times (IF said mates are trustworthy enough).

PS2 is backwards compatable. That's enough for me since most my games are PSX games anyway.

Xbox is a good party system too, mind you. That's where the PS2 falters. The system could've easily had 4 ports, but no, they just went with 2, ruining all chances of there being a lot of multiplayer gaming market for it (how many people really go out and buy multitaps and use them?)

You still have to bux X-box controllers.

Three X-box controllers cost MORE than three PS2 controllers and a multi-tap

Pez - Well said... Even for a woman who knows nothing about games ;)

LD - Well ya see the PC is made for Personal Computing.. If I want to watch DVD's I'll use my console...

http://www.xbox365.com/xp_consoles.shtml

That page is the bottom line when it comes to stats about each of the big four. Now please try and argue those stats LD and SB.

And yes LD, the PS2 does crash. My Xbox I'd say has froze once.. maybe twice if I think hard enough. My best friends PS2 has at least five times while we've played NHL 2001 together... And keep in mind I play my Xbox every day while the PS2 playing is maybe once every month at his place.

This isn't to say the PS2 is all that bad... It is a very good system. The huge library of games and backwards compablity really are a bonus over both Xbox and GC. But to say the Xbox sucks as some people have in here is just being asinine. (Look it up..)

Btw, "Whacked" makes Xbox a good party system but other than that game the Gamcube is the best for multiple players.. I'd love to play Super Smash Bros. for the Gamecube one of these days..
