to the Middle East in the midst of some Easter Popefest.

What does he think this is going to accomplish?

He's catholic. Neither side pays all that much attention to him.

Was this a futile gesture, or did it make a difference?

Popefest...sounds a lot like poopfest and that's sick-o.

Won't accomplish shit (pun intended) but that's his job, to stand up and act all Pope-like.

He should concentrate on keeping his priest's cocks out of seven-year-old mouths.

Don't you think he should step down and let a younger, more athletic pope step up?

The church needs an injection of new blood if they're going to compete with all the other religions.

Seriously. And wtf? I don't think the catholics even have programs for televangelism or suicide bombing. They are so yesterday.

Someone needs to speak for peace. I am a well and truely lapsed catholic and I see little in the church to respect or admire. I do think that calls for peace while futile in the specific case can be useful if only to remind us that peace is necessary.

Peace, the myth

Not one great acheivement of man has been accomplished without the goal of war in mind. Almost every technical advance has come at the expense of man's inhumanity to his fellow man. I can point to not a single decade of my life when fellow countrymen were not dying in a battle somewhere. I can find no period of human history where there was not one tribe (state, nation) in conflict with another.

Peace is a myth, an ideal, a regional temporary state of affairs between wars.

That being said, I support peace for the ideal that it is. It is a desirable condition. But at the same time I fear that should we, the human race, ever achieve it, it will be the beginning of the end of our existence. For conflict is the way that we overcome adversity. Striving to survive is what strenghens the gene pool. Remove the barriers to survival and I fear that we will become complacent, weak, and ultimately extinct.

But I applaud the Pope for trying.
