The lack of urgency disturbs me. We need to be fixing the planet. Habitat restoration, reforestation. Rewilding. Also, finally deal with the 800 pound gorilla in the room, Carbon. Not only must we absolutely positively stop, ban for all time is extraction, we must sequester at least 2,000,000,000,000 tons from the atmosphere, turn them into a valuable solid or, our species is through. Along with count with others. Seems a shame to meet a waste 4 billion years of evolution. I’m certainly not speaking of Homosapien. We’re skin parasite on the planet. But the hundreds of thousands if not millions of other genius, species are innocent bystanders and will obviously be collateral damage from our lack of awareness. Not at some far off date you can’t comprehend because you know you’ll probably be dead by then. It could happen any time. Any day really. Our combination of extreme temperatures and moisture variability along with our modern system of no inventory, six months of food on hand at any given time and we produce it on an annual basis. When the food wars start, the cascade effect will be unpredictable, unbelievable, and unstoppable. It’s a miracle it hasn’t already.
Also, I would contend, we need to save and restore the Republic. A Constitutional reaffirmation, I would call it.
Both, an incredibly heavy lift by themselves. Unfathomable, at least to me, together.
Part of me feels like Gene Kranz at mission control during Apollo 13. This will be our end or our finest hour. Well, realistically they had 1 billion times greater chance of getting home then we do saving the 3rd rock has something we would recognize 100 years from now. I am taking side bitch by the way, Permian redux or Mars. I’m glad I’m alive right now. It’s going to be interesting, to say the least. It would be cool to see a supernova before I take the trip also, but not relevant.
But no. We’re fighting fascism and despotism or, worse yet, happily choosing between the two, somehow thinking if my side wins, it’s decent government.
Julius Gaius Caesar and the boys, Sula, Crassius, Mark Anthony, Romulus, Scipio, Titus, would have crucified as all from the steps of the Senate down the Appian way to the gates of Naples. Cesar would’ve been so pissed off, he would’ve made sure a mathematician made certain our crucifixes were equally spaced.
I don’t know how else to tell you other than, we are failing.
We as in “we the people”
Miserably, I’m afraid.
