The Bitch Thread

Hmmn serious .......a little boy died here very recently because of Nut Allergy and it happened at school but he DID eat peanut butter. I have no idea why.........

I had a look in google brioche the things you also need to avoid because of cross contamination are the following :

# lecithins or food additive 322
# arachis (an alternative term for peanut)
# hydrolyzed vegetable protein (which may be found in some cereals)

I couldn't find a single Company that advertised its product as Nut Free that did not fall into the Health Food Range online. Considering I imagine you live in the US or Canada. (think I remember Cananda from a Thread)

Why not ask the parents? If they trust a certain cereal thats a good shape for the craft activity then the child is safe, you are covered and the parents are happy. Hey...... get the parents to supply it for the entire class after all you have been so considerate

Thank you for the information, if not the attitude.
In case you are not aware, teachers have to pay for a lot of costs out of their own pocket.
Since the beginning of February, I have spent over $500 on the class in costs that I won't get back, and finances are getting tight, so excuse me if I don't want to pay the exorbitant prices the local health food store charges for nut free cereal.
I'm doing this activity because I think the kids would find it fun, and am trying to find a way to keep it relatively inexpensive.
I also need enough for almost 80 kids.

I think I will ask the parents, since they have much more money than I do. I teach in a very well off neighbourhood and am still adjusting to the fact.

Interestingly, gracie, she's allergic to peanuts - and almonds. I'm supposed to avoid all nuts as a safety measure. But a kid in the other class is also allergic to peanuts.

Ohh one of these guess what, tomato is a fruit kind of things  .

Pity though it doesn't change the fact that peanuts contain the same major allergenic proteins (called Ara h 1, 2, and 3) as tree nuts .

"These proteins are the leading cause of anaphylaxis, the most severe and potentially life threatening allergic reaction, and the main cause of death from food allergy in the US and other Western nations."

Guess Pea-legume Butter sounds kinda gross to........

I actually bought something called Freenut butter made of soybeans. It's ok and tastes similar to peanut butter, but I've heard peabutter, made with the brown pea, tastes almost exactly the same. I've wanted to try it for a while.

You're right though, none of them have the same ring to it.

Whoaaaaaaaa no attitude intended on my part. I could muster one up if that helps any though :D

Oh. I thought the  was implying a certain amount of lack of consideration on my part, which, considering my questions I don't feel I have.
But in that case, thank you for the information. :)

From what i just looked up on google, you have to check the boxes at the store because manufacturers change ingredients on a regular basis.
That must be a PIA for someone with peanut allergy.

*clears throat*

I know this is supposed to be serious and all but damn, I have to say it, I just love nuts. I can't imagine being allergic to them, seriously. They comprise one of my major food groups, no lie.

What else is a PIA, along those lines, is an allergy to MSG. (I get migraines.) They put MSG in everything.

Actually, if you are not allergic to them, they are mostly good for you.

It takes one to love one.

Now, I do think we are very much the same in most respects, but I hate to say it, sweetie...I HATE NUTS!

They're bad for you if you have crohns disease, too - too fibrous. *ouch*

I did some research, and I THINK Fruit Loops will be OK, I'll check later at the store. Apparently Fruit Loops cereal bars are peanut/nut free, and they use the cereal...
I'll have to double check, this site was only about snacks.

Are you calling me a nut?

And that you hate me and that we are not alike?

I did some fruit loop art once when I was teaching the "young twos" at Mother's Day out one year.

It was fun and tasty!

Umm! Big hot, salty thick pretzels! I love em! Also small hard salty thin ones are great. Then again I have a swim suit I call my pretzel suit. It's a one piece but it shows my tummy and a lot of skin, it's my husbands fav. I've got to find another because I've had it for a long time (20 years or so) and it's starting to get loose seams here and there.

what I said was I don't like nuts. Cashews, walnuts, almonds, etc. I didn't say anywhere that I diidn't like FurryFury. There is a difference between human nuts and other nuts, you know.

It's kind of funny that we're talking about nuts and fruit loops in the same thread. When talking about humans, aren't nuts and frut loops kinda the same thing?

Now back to miss brioche...

Cool, very cool and colored as well should make the project outstanding for the kids. I have to laugh thats the exact same cereal that was indispersed with colored dry pasta thats still strung up on the necklace my son brought home from kindergarten........smiles

I too have such mementos of my kids pre school days.

I love pretty much all nuts except those little nipple looking ones.

But I HATE mixed nuts. I like my nuts segregated and compartmentalized. I fall in love with ONE nut in the mixes and have to dig and dig until THAT ONE is consumed before I can enjoy the next. Someone gave me this HUGE freakin nut jar for Christmas. So far the cashews and pecans are gone. The other nuts look scared.

Bwahaha!

Yuck. I hate pecans so much, they give me CHILLS! They are the worst. I can't believe people actually put them on cookies and inside brownies. Why are these people so STUPID?

I do that, too. I start with the brazillian nuts, then I eat the cashews, then the walnuts, then the almonds, then the hazlenuts. Then I give my kids the peanuts. yick.
