How do I know that tariff workarounds are the worst kept secret in import export? Because they are. I have friends in the industry. Ports are grossly under regulated; most foreign co can work around most import/ export duty and excise taxes by creating a Canadian company, which can then do business in America. I don’t have time to link you with the many articles on this issue, but if I can make some time, I will find them for you.

This isn’t about Trump and what a shady individual he is. So before you throw that at me - this is a strictly academic question as to whether tariffs are a good thing in this situation. I think they are. I would go one step further and assess additional excise taxes on tourism and agricultural products to and from Mexico.

Tall fences make for better neighbors. And Mexico and Canada have been complicit to say the least in ruining our economic position and stunting domestic growth. This will hurt in the short term but will help us in the long term.
