U.S. Retailers Preparing for Tariffs and ILA Strike Threat


After the three day port strike that occurred in October, retailers are prepared for any challenges that can come with higher tariffs on Chinese goods. Retailers such as Ralph Lauren, Williams Sonoma, and Target diverted their cargo to the West Coast before the strike on October 1st and were able to receive their cargo in a timely manner. Target CFO Michael Fiddelke spoke on the diversions to the West Coast stating, “[it] came at a cost, but allowed us to be well-positioned for our guests through the strike and into the holiday season”. The International Longshoremen's Association last week announced they pulled out of negotiations and accused the USMX of pushing to introduced semi-automated equipment at port terminals. The tentative agreement has an expiration date of January 15, 2025.
