Tariffs announced on Canada, China, & Mexico goods

Trump’s tariff fetish …

Donald Trump announces new 25% tariffs on cars from overseas

The tariffs will go into effect next week, on 2 April, the president claimed, and the US will start collecting them the following day. “This is very exciting,” he said, suggesting the move would spur economic growth.

Now if other nations follow Trump’s reciprocity rule, they will all put 25% tariffs on vehicles exported from the US.

There are no winners of a trade war.

Watching America under Donny boy is like watching a train crash in slow motion.

It's as if someone (no prizes for guessing who) has thought up a dream list of truly mad, evil and dangerous things that Donny could do to wreck the US economy and sever relations with traditional allies... which he is now being blackmailed into enacting.

Ok, my local Tesla dealership has just announced plans to lay off staff. Sounds more than probable they wouldn't be around for any necessary after sales service if I bought one.

On the other hand, that nice Chinese BYD operation has just opened up a dealership within reach... and their even nicer Dolphin Surf will soon be available. Exactly what I want...

Come to think of it, do I really like this Bourbon stuff that we've been buying lately? Somehow I now feel a craving for a decent Glenmorangie coming on...

Painting your face with the Stars and Stripes doesn't make you an American, Donny boy.

In fact, it kind of makes people suspicious that your real loyalties lie elsewhere...

Is that what this is about? They won't do it -- labor is too expensive here. That is why almost the whole American manufacturing sector has been offshored to countries where labor is cheaper.
Rolls-Royce are considering it

It's a sure thing being in the EU accelerated UK's deindustrialization ( that and UK manufacturing being so unionised modernisation was resisted at every turn because the 'workers' objected to it ). The removal of trade barriers with former Eastern bloc countries with very low wages and workers' protections inevitably meant the migration of manufacturing to the east.

Government also like it because it helped them pretend they were green, if we shifted our dirty work offshore we could pretend we were doing our bit to save the planet. Yippee!

With automation energy costs rather than labour will likely determine where manufacturing happens in future.
It certainly won't be in the UK, we have the highest energy costs in the world now

There's enough Teslas in circulation now for people to make a fair assessment of their build quality and durability and by all accounts it's not looking great.

I'm starting to see a few BYDs about Cambridge now, it will be interesting to see how well they last.

I just saw this too. Trump doing his best to force Canada into the arms of the EU, which goven everythng he's been saying, won't be so hard. Canadians don't see that concerned about a trade war with the USA and their politics align more with the EU in any case.

I could probably make a case that a sensible diplomatic and trade initiatove could have resulted in closer and better ties between both countries, but Trumps approach is guaranteed to piss Canadian's off. And it has. Either way, Trump has pretty much guaranteed the Liberals will win the next Canadian election by a large majority, fliupping it from an almost certain Conservative win. And Carney is a much much different leader than Trudeau.

And the end result is......One in five Americans want their state to join Canada amid escalating trade war: Trump may be constantly threatening to annex Canada by force, but its his own citizens who are more likely to want to be annexed by their northern neighbour, a new poll suggests. One in five Americans (20 per cent) polled by Leger this week say they would like their state to join Canada, more than double the proportion of Canadians who said they would like their country to become the 51st state of the United States.

but but but trump has threatened to put even bigglier tariffs on ANY country retaliating to the raised tariffs he's just imposed... this is all so, so, stupid

how the hell does he work that one out? oh, I guess he'll exempt the US because he can but the hypocrisy is staggering
what I find most appalling is the disregard for the men and women on the line. Their safety is paramount for themselves and carrying out the mission. They bravado and blatant stupidity using an app like Signal is just plain idiotic. Accountability needs to be done. Go have the hearing and talk yourselves to death on the hill. What is being done for no repeats? Better security or just better attention to skirting proper security and protocols?
And for all hegseth's blustering about no details of the launch sites etc..., security experts are quite clear that there was only one option for the launch of (if I recall this correctly) the fighter jets and that was a naval vessel that would have been immediately identifiable to foreign actors. Don't have time to find that cite right this minute but if I come across it I'll post it here.

Well well well, turns out others play the same game as Trump. Who knew.....

Ontario will cut off U.S. electricity exports 'with a smile on my face,' Ford says

"They rely on our energy, they need to feel the pain," Premier Doug Ford said Monday on cutting Ontario electricity exports to U.S. As Canada prepares for U.S. President Donald Trump to unleash his trade war against Canada on Tuesday, Ontario’s ready to pull the plug. Speaking Monday at a mining convention in downtown Toronto, Ontario Premier Doug Ford doubled down on threats to cut electricity exports to U.S. border states if the tariffs go through. “If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything — including cut off their energy with a smile on my face,” Ford told reporters.

“They rely on our energy, they need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard, we’re going to come back twice as hard.” The United States is a major customer for Canadian electricity, with all American power grids — with the exception of Texas — interconnected with Canadian provinces. New York, Michigan and Minnesota are Ontario’s three biggest customers of domestically-produced power. Ford backed up his assertions to match the U.S. tariff for tariff, and dollar for dollar. “That’s exactly what we’re going to do,” Ford said.

“The provinces have a big say in it, but it’s the federal government that’s leading the charge, and we’re going to stand shoulder-to-shoulder no matter who’s in the federal government.”

Trump is really fucking this up. This isn't the NY real estate market where he was a big dog. This is international trade and the USA isn't the only market out there. The EU. China. cough cough....and now that Trump has demonstrated how a rogue US President can screw up things, Canada would be silly not to look to developing other markets quickly, and reducing their trade dependance on the USA.

And of course if Trump slaps traiff's on cars, all that will do is push the price of cars up in the USA and hurt the US auti manufacturers, who are inextricably interlinked across the border - and it would take years and billions in investments to unravel that linkage. Meanwhile of course losing the Canadian market. Oh well. Trump is a genius of course, he understands these things.

Never mind governments, people the world over are already beginning personal boycotts of US goods, products and services.

Sometimes this is a deliberate choice, sometimes it operates at a subconscious level... but for sure the world is weaning itself off its almost traditional, uncritical adulation of all things American, now beginning to see many of them for what they really are:

in a word, vastly overrated.

Americans, your Trump moron has started something which is going to lead, inevitably, to a re-balancing of the world order... and not in your favour...

Does this mean New Yorkers will suffer blackouts, or just higher power bills?

Does this mean New Yorkers will suffer blackouts, or just higher power bills?

The fourth-largest energy commodity traded between Canada and the U.S. is electricity, preceded by crude oil, natural gas and petroleum, respectively. Energy products from Canada now pace a 10 percent tariff. Several cities still benefit significantly from Canadian electricity, including Buffalo, New York; Ogdensburg, New York; Pembina, North Dakota; Seattle, Washington; Great Falls, Montana; and Portland, Maine. Those cities, particularly upstate New York, would be significantly impacted if Canadian leaders block energy exports to the U.S. If electricity exports are blocked with little warning, Webster said it could result in significant price increases for Americans. In addition to New York, Michigan and Minnesota, states identified as importing the most electricity from Canada include North Dakota, New Hampshire, Maine, California, Vermont, Nevada and Arizona, according to a 2020 report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

"Although the amount of electricity imported over the Canadian border is a small part of the overall U.S. power supply, the transmission connections linking Canada and the United States are an important component of the electricity markets in northern states."

Canada just torched its alliance with the U.S.

Mark Carney didn’t mince words: “The old relationship we had with the United States—based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation—is over.”

That’s not a policy disagreement. That’s a geopolitical divorce.

And it’s all unraveling in real time.

Xi and Putin have to be looking at this and just laughing, Xi in particular, because Ukraine aside, Russia is a bit-part player in all of this. To drive Canada away from the USA in a few weeks is no mean feat, and yet, Trump has succeded in doing irreparable damage to that relationship, probably to the extent that, even with a change in President, it's not repairable. Canada will fall in with the EU. Trump is destroying so many relationships here, he'll get what he wanted. America Alone. Honestly, if Putin was paying him, he couldn't be doing a better job. And with what he's doing to Ukraine, you have to think Putin is paying him off.

Pierre is talking along the same lines. It's now the ONLY real election issue for Canadians.

Words fail me.

Bigger bills, Ontario doesn't supply much to New York state. The three states buy "spot market" electricity, it's not base load power, more for peaking loads. The exception is Minnesota where Ontario powers a couple area's where US lines don't reach, maybe 10 MW. So if Ontario isn't supplying it cheaply, New York will just buy more expensive power elsewhere.
