More great info again - thanks!

Ok so for a bit there I was leaning toward Gamecube... but now I'm back in the middle of deciding between Xbox and PS2. And all those Mario type games never really interested me.

The list of new games coming out for Xbox sounds great and I like the idea that I can just hook it right up to my cable modem.

I like Role Playing games but not as much as I like Strategy games and Shooters. I like those martial arts fighter games too.

I think I will go to a couple stores, pen and paper like Arc suggested, and make a list of the games and decide on that. I think I'm starting to lean toward Xbox though.

I'll check out those links as well as videogamereview.com - thanks!

I have the PS2 and Gamecube, Gamecube only because of the exclusive Resident Evil games, and the PS2 has exclusive Grand Theft Auto games, with backward compatibility, and a wider selection of games than the X-Box and 'Cube.

I'd say get a PS2, for the wider selection of games, and since a lot of third party developers are steering clear of the dying Gamecube, you should too

Hiya Dilly,

My sons had a Nintendo 64 and last Christmas we decided to get them a new system because the 64 was pretty much outdated. We researched it, asked around a lot and discussed it among the two of us and finally decided to get them a PS2. Needless to say, two days after putting the PS2 on layaway, the boys informed us that the HAD to have a Game Cube instead. *sigh*

We did get them the Game Cube and they love it. When I play games though, I go over to my friend Joey's and play his PS2. :D

One other thing I would like to add here is that every time Nintendo comes out with a new game system, the old games about pretty much worthless because the do not fit into ANY other system. At least with the PS systems, you can play the older games.

If I were handed a free-console coupon, I'd probably go GameCube. Zelda's looking pretty sweet, whether it's kiddied up or not. Mario, heck, even Metroid Prime would be on my to-get list. Super Monkey ball too!

I'm going to try and stay off this year's crop though. The games are okay, but incredibly poor in qulaity in my opinion. They seem to be more complicated and in-depth than fun. That's kinda why I like monkey ball. You have a monkey, and it's in a ball. Roll it around to the end of the level. That's it!

(I do have the Gameboy Advance though. I'm patiently waiting for Golden Sun 2...)

Keep in mind, if you're the type that feels worried after a purchase, that they're all good systems. They obviously don't have all the same titles and output, but they will entertain you in their own way.

My vote goes for an Xbox. Sure the PS2 has more games, it has been out more than a year before the others. To me, it is like imparting a VCR to a DVD player.

If you have a cable modem, then I highly recommend getting Xbox live and hooking it up for online play. An added bonus for the Xbox live is that you can download game updates such as new maps or current rosters and such. Plus, it all goes on the hard drive so it will stay with the game.

Another cool feature of the Xbox that gets overlooked is you can copy your music CD's onto the hard drive and incorporate that music into the soundtrack of the game.

Don't wait for the PS3, there will always be another bigger and better system coming soon.

I hope to get a PS2 and Xbox soon. Xbox because of Panzer Dragoon:Orta and also because no one else has it in my house. And then PS2 so that I can play So-Com online with my brother. There are already 2 other PS2's in the house and my brother and roommate play So-Com late into the night. Does anyone relate to this at all?

I'd go with the playstation2 just for final fantasy alone.

I'll second that! I just picked up a PS2 recently for the Final Fantasy games. I'm just an RPG geek :D

I own all three systems and all three have something different to offer by way of games.

It seems as if most developers now are coming out with " cross platform " games. Meaning that the game is available on all three systems. However ... this does not mean that what system you have will have the best game.
One of the best racing games available IMHO is Need for Speed. With the latest game on the market being Need for Speed : Hot Pursuit 2 on all three systems, it has been noted that the best one is on the PS2. The GC & X-Box versions are just not up to the standards most NFS players desire.

What type of game you like to play should have a direct effect on your purchase decision.

While Nintendo has a reputation for being a " kiddie console " ... all anyone has to do is play a little bit of the Resident Evil series on the GC or Eternal Darkness and believe me .. that rumor will be put to rest. Overall Nintendo has a solid reputation for being slow as hell in releasing games, but when they do finally come out, they will knock your socks off. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee is a blast to play with multiplayers, also Super Smash Bros is a good game.

Each console has it's version of spooky games. Silent Hill is now available for PS2 as well as X-Box, each system has it's share of fighting games, although Nintendo does not have any fighting games that are as solid as the Tekken or DoA series. Virtua Fighter is also good if that is what you like.

PS2 is online with SOCOM : US Navy Seals, but the server is so crappy that most of the players who are serious about war games have moved on to X-Box's Ghost Recon. So far in online gaming ... X-Box live seems to be where it's at. Mech Assualt, NFL2K3, GhostRecon, MotoGP, Unreal Championship, Whacked, are all online now and with the rumored Halo2 and SteelBattalion coming online next year or so .... for $60 a year it is worth having unlimited opponents to play against.

The price of the systems has already gone down ... from $299 for the PS2 and the X-Box to $149 and the GC from $199 to $ 149.

BTW ... EGM magazine has an article this month saying the PS3 is looking at a 2005 release.

Each system has it's pro's and con's. If I was forced to choose only one ... for me it would be the PS2. Only because it has the games I like to play. But each system has games I like to play ... all of the games I have listed in this post are games I personally own for one console or another. ( ahhh with the exception of Halo 2 for you nit pickers out there ... it's not out yet so I can't own it lol ... but when it comes out ..... I will be at the store with my money in hand )

;)

If you are not looking for an all around entertainmant system ( meaning you do not care about DVD players and such ) then the main deciding factor is all about the Software. After all, you are buying a game system, so choose the one you think has the games you will like most, then when the prices go even further down, pick up another one.

If there is anyway I can help with game info, X-Box live info, what ever ... drop me a line ... if I don't have the answer, I have a huge resource of video gamer friends who probably do. :D

....the heighborhoods became ghost towns in summer....great for me, but where are the kids?

You know where.

Sitting in their rooms all by themselves starring at a tv screen so long they are ready to have an epileptic siezure.
unfortunately you're right. Five years ago this neighborhood had street hockey and every other imaginable kid thing going on. Since the latest generation of vidgames came out...nothing.

mine want to play it all the time and if they're not playing it, they're thinking about it. We have to put limits on them.

I hate hearing myself say "when I was a kid..."

Sometimes I really hate video games...and the cartoon network

but my vote would be GC since it plays mostly to the younger crowd and has less violence in general

as one who owns all 3 let me give you my rundown...

Gamecube....all the traditional nintendo licenses, plus a few HUGE steals from dreamcast. otherwise, they haven't even been able to hold onto exclusive licenses for many games because they're not selling enough.

PS2....some absolutely great games especially if you like FF or GTA. but, the processor is the slowest of the three and memory cards don't hold near as much as you'd hope.

XBOX...HARD DRIVE! ETHERNET connection for broadband! personally all my money goes here now. the games rock. the play rocks. it's fast as lightning. no expansion except for the communicator to get online.

as for playing DVD's...never EVER do this. even with the newer lasers and control mechanisms, they're really still not made to play dvd's ....

For me the decision comes down to if you have a cable modem or not and enjoy playing games online. If you do go with the x-box. If not go with the PS2.

x-box is definetly creating a niche for itself as the online console to have. so if you ache to play against other people online go with the x-box

I'm so confused. The general consensus in the responses here seem to be 1/2 for xbox 1/2 for PS2 - but the voting in the poll heavily favors the PS2.

I'm sure, as some have said, that I'd be happy with any of these. I think I'm still leaning towards the xbox for 2 reasons - the hard drive, and the on-line connectivity.

Knowing how much you like online shoot out I think you should go for an xbox.

I have a friend who got one and we havent seen it in 2 months!!!! He plays alot online and he says there a big community of players out there with xbox machine.

It's a real problem that not too may people want to adress, or think about.

My wife divorced her ex because he sat and played a game called Everquest 15 hours a day....no kidding...fifteen hours a day.

When he calls the kids or sees the kids ( that I raise along with their mom) he doesnt ask about grades, how things are going....it's all about the games. The guys 43 years old.

And look at this thread for example.....heres a bunch of guys.....and this video game thing is mostly a guy thing realize this.....a bunch of guys ranging in age from 20 to 40 talking about toys.

I realize it is entertainment, but it is so way out of hand it is rediculous.

I firmly believe that this video game revolution is changing society in the way men mostly will interact with people. It's creating a nation of low social skills, low patience level, no excersise, kids, that will at some point be low social skills, low patience level, no excersise adults, fathers, and husbands.

It's the drug addiction of the 21st century for men mostly.

We all do too much of one thing or another, but too much sitting alone in your room all day, staring at the screen with your mouth open looking like your in a daze, trying to cast a spell, or kill a dragon is wierd.

Wierd for a 13 year old, and even wierder for an adult.

according to the "experts" in my house:

PS2 "sucks and blows" at the same time - I assume that's bad

GameCube should be renamed to "LameCube" - also bad

XBox "ROCKS" - which is Good!

of course, your mileage may vary, and if you do select Xbox, you are helping to line the pockets of the badass Gates (who, I've heard, is disliked by some)

( personally, I like Micro$oft ) (shudder)

The voting still has PS2 way in the lead - though my gut is still saying Xbox...

go with yer gut...

another factoid... xbox has this "live" thingy which allows you to play special online versions of games using your DSL or cable modem. It costs about $40 for a year subscription I think..
(of course u have to buy these special "live-version" games)

In a way, you are summing up your own inept ability at social skills huh? Not to mention your own low patience level. And your ever increasing redundancy.....

I bought a PS2...mainly because of the variety of games. I spend enough time on Lit..I don't need to be playing "other" games...

Plus I have a good friend that works at Sony...and he gets comp free games (usually first runs from production) to give to friends to help advertise...

Already I've saved over $1,500.....

I also heard that the X-Box had a faulty cooling fan problem...did they fix that?

Also some other news tidbit that not alot of people know...by this christmas...there will be over 50(yes FIFTY) games that you can play online for the X-Box. Promised.
