I can't decide which one to get. Which has the best graphics? Best games? Best features?

I've read some reviews. I know that the Playstation and GameCube have a lot more games then the XBox but the quantity doesn't interest me so much as the quality. I'm not going to go out and buy a couple hundred games.

I know the Playstation has a DVD built in but I heard its pretty basic - and I already have a top end DVD player so that feature doesn't make a difference to me.

XBox can connect to the internet via Ethernet (cable modem) I believe. I like that feature a lot.

What else? I'm not sure. Please let me know which one you would choose and why.

Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge the PS2 can also hook up to the net to play multi-player games.

Graphically I think the X-box is better in general. Though the PS3 is suppose to be amazing.

I must say that I don't like the Xbox or GameCube controllers. They just don't fit into my hands nicely and I find them uncomfortable.

Overall the PS systems are your best buy for the amount of games you have IMHO. Like any system you get good and bad games but I think that the majority are on the good side.

Have fun and rem to still get out and get laid.

We have all three.. the Playstation 2 is played the most. But I think that is because the son that plays the video games more than anyone else has more games for PS2 than he does any of the other systems.

Video games are for nerds, and they are creating a nation of NO social skills zombie kids. Hiure a babysitter folks....a real live babysitter.....the money you spend now, wont compare to the money your kid will save on therapy as an adult.

When was the last time you saw a baseball game on your street.

Notice your kids patience levels disapearing?

When was the last time your 15 year old boy spent an hour pacing trying to get the nerve up to call "the girl" and ask her to the school dance.

Sure....these same kids arent out getting into trouble like I did as a kid.....but I have memories, and great stories to tell about my younger years.....what memories are these kids going to have. Gee, I remember sitting in my room for 10 hours every saturday playing video games......

Pfffft!

I think the video game revolution is a conspiracy by the Japanese to turn american kids into a bunch of dopes.....and its workin.

It's always seemed that the Nintendo systems have been primarily geared at young kids. I don't have any of 'em, so that's my entire contribution. Howeever, if I were to buy one, I'd get a PS2.

I read an article where it is targeted for 2005.

Myself, I prefer the X-box for overall graphics & sounds even though there is not as many games. You do need a cable modem though to go have X-box live.

One other thing....I've worked in the landscape industry off and on for fifteen years....there was a time when in the summer I would have to dodge the kids on the neighborhoods in my truck, and kick them off the yard when I needed to apply chemicals......then, all of the sudden....the heighborhoods became ghost towns in summer....great for me, but where are the kids?

You know where.

Sitting in their rooms all by themselves starring at a tv screen so long they are ready to have an epileptic siezure.

When is the PS3 supposed to come out?
Can't tell you for sure. I had heard it was planned for an Xmas release but couldn't tell you what year.

The other bonus of the PS systems is that you can play older PS1 games on the PS2. The PS3 is suppose to have a similar feature.

I found this on http://videogames.about.com

Sony PlayStation 2
Sony's PlayStation 2 is the big boy on the block. With the most units sold, the most games available, as well as the fact that it can play both DVDs and PlayStation 1 games, the PS 2 is the most popular system out there. It is also the oldest, and therefore has inferior graphics and sound to both the Xbox and GameCube. It also only supports 2 players, whereas the other two systems support 4.

Microsoft Xbox
The Xbox offers the best graphics, surround sound, built in hard drive, built in network support, and DVD playback. The Xbox supports 4 players, and it is easily linked to up to four more boxes for 16 player games, it can be taken online as well. Unfortunately the Xbox has the least games out there, and many complained about the size of its original controller. There is a smaller one avaible.

Nintendo GameCube
The GameCube offers cutting edge graphics and sound, and four player support. Exclusive games like Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, and Star Fox Adventures make this a very popular system, especially with younger gamers. The GameCube is the least expensive system. Unfortunately, it is also the only system that does not play DVD movies. Many people also, mistakenly, think of it a kiddie system.

didn't someone (probably Atari) just come out with the old Atari type joysticks, with games built into it? You hook it directly up to the TV I think.

Still have my 2600. You're gonna have to find new joy sticks though.

I don't have one. I almost bought one years ago and decided to go for Nintendo instead because it was newer and better. Wish I'd gotten the Atari instead. I love Space Invaders, Galaga, Centipede. The new games just aren't the same.

We have the old Atari system. (I certainly don't know the numbers.) The original Nintendo, Nintendo 64, PS and Gamecube. That's what happens when you have boys 14 years apart. We havean Atari Lynx handheld, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advanced.

I'd say find the games you want to play and then buy the system. They are all fun in their own way. We have them hooked up in our living room and can control the play time and also have alot of interaction. I have always enjoyed playing them and it is a great way to connect with my son. We play and fight over it and have a great time sharing. He loves that he is better at it than me.

So, Dill, I don't have an answer for you. The fun and the play is what is important to me, not the graphics or anything else.

Horses for courses, really...

Each console has its good and bad sides, and the arguments about which is the best can go on for years (then the 'best' one is rendered obsolete by new technology - story of the world  )

The way I see it, good and bad points for each would be:

PS2: It has the largest library of games (including the PS1 library), and can play DVD's using a SOFTWARE player (ie you load a program to your Memory card to play DVDs). It is, now, the oldest console in the current group and may be superseded by the PS3 and other consoles. I don't know about its connectivity, so I won't comment there.

XBOX: It is (speaking in Australian terms here) the newest console, and has (according to Micro$oft) the most powerful graphics processor, plus its hard drive (NO memory cards to lose :D ). It plays DVDs through HARDWARE (but you DO need an add-on for the remote - the controller itself won't do it). I believe it can be connected to 'XBOX Live' through a cable modem, but I don't think it can surf the net (and if you don't have cable, don't bother trying to hook it up  )

GameCube: I don't really know that much about the GameCube, not having seen it in action. I DO know that it cannot play DVDs AT ALL, that it is backed by Nintendo (one of the better game makers, IMO) and that it has a game I would dearly LOVE to see on the XBox (Rogue Leader).

Really, it comes down to what games you want to play. I have an XBox (I got it for the DVD capability, and to play Halo :D).

Good advice all - thanks - and keep it coming.

From what I've read at various sites it does seem to come down to the games. But I still haven't heard anything, about the consoles or the games, that has convinced me which one to get yet...

I do like - as Xstatic mentioned - the fact that the Xbox has a hard drive. And I do have a cable modem so I can hook it up easily. I like that its go fairly new technology as well. The lack of games is a minus and the DVD player is not an issue.

The number of games on PS2 is the big selling point there - however, being the oldest technology of the 3 is a minus. Of course I could always get the Xbox now and wait for the PS3 to come out in a couple years. I think it will probably be the first of the big 3 to come to market with the next generation box. I haven noticed though that PS2 is leading in the poll here. PS2 could possibly be out just for the simple fact that only 2 people can play it at a time. Does anyone have any comments on how good or how awkward it is on the other systems when more than 2 people are playing?

Most of the discussion here - and at other sites - seems to center on the PS2 and Xbox and Gamecube seems to be the odd console out. Yet it has fairly new technology, a large # of games, and a great track record.

As far as the Killer Game - each console seems to have at least one INCREDIBLE game. I just read through a list of top 10 games on each console and they all looked pretty good. One type of game that seems to be missing on all 3 are Strategy Games which are among my favorite to play on the PC. Of course, I can keep playing them on the PC even after I get a console.

Some of my favorite PC games have been Total Annihilation, Quake and Quake II, Unreal Tournament and Unreal Tournament II, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Sims, SimCity, HalfLife.

If I put it into that perspective - if I could decide which console had at least a couple of good Strategy games and a few great shooters - adn some type of Sim - I'd probably be happy.

I don't suppose any of them have anything like Neverwinter's Night?

That pretty much does sum it up. I personally have the x-box and love playing games online and the hard drive feature. The graphics are so much better than the PS2's in most of their games. But the downside is that PS2 has ALOT more games(both great, good and bad) then the x-box.
Right now I'm debating if I want to trade in my x-box for a PS2 just so I can play more and different games.

The x-box has the Sims coming out for it here pretty soon along with Unreal Championship. They also have rpg's like Morrowind, Metal Dungeon, D&D(coming soon), and Phantasy Star Online 1 & 2(coming soon). Any more questions lemme know.

Dilly ~

My advice & what I tell all customer is to look at the games for each system ... Bring a pad of paper & pen to yer local video game shop & make a list of all the game that you are interested for each system.

Also check out the mags or asked the sales associate what games are coming out & make a list of those for each system ... Which ever system has the most game that you want to play get that one.

X-Box has the best graphics & is already able to play games on-line thru purchasing X-Box ... You just need cable or DSL connection to the internet ... If yer big on sports, racing or fighting games, this is probably the best system to go with.

Playstation has the largest catalog of games ... If yer big on RPGs (Roll Playing Games) its paradise! It is also on-line campatable but you need to buy the modem. Same as the X-box you can use cable & DSL. As well as dial-up ... but I am not sure how well the dial-up connection witll work.

PS3 is not going to be coming out any time soon ... At lease not for another 4 to 5 years ... They have not even maxed out the capabilities of the system at present.

Game Cube is yer choice if you really like the Nintendo characters & games ... Like Mario Party, Legend of Zelda or Starfox ... It also has (at the moment) exclusive rights to the Resedent Evil Series, & two great RPGs that were on the old Sega Dreamcast system ... Evolution Worlds & Skies of Arcadia.

Check out the The video game thread ... Here.

If you have question to ask about the games coming out or what ever.

I myself have both an X-Box & PS2, Plus a GBA (Game Boy Adv) ... I play mostly RPGs & adventure games.
