oggbashan said:The postgraduate examination led to a piece of parchment I still have. It begins:
"Sir,
I am commanded by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty..."
And ends:
"I beg to remain, Sir, Your most humble and obedient servant..."
He wasn't. 'Humble and obedient' that is. He outranked me and he knew it.
That was my letter of appointment dated 1962. By 1966 'My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty" were as dead as Samuel Pepys and I was part of the Ministry of Defence (Navy). It doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

Don't feel bad Og.. I never was in the military... missed by the skin of my teeth! had a draft number of 169 and they took everyone 168 and under.
Then they hired me to write the guidance and control manuals of a space vehicle... now if I tol ya which one i'd have to go across the ocean and kill ya.
suffice it to say.. those buggers went bang in a big way (usually when they launched rather than makin it to any kinda landing).
They didn't think me fit to cary a rifle.. so they gave me a nuke.... makes some kinda twisted sence don't it?
your posts always make me smile.
