The postgraduate examination led to a piece of parchment I still have. It begins:

"Sir,

I am commanded by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty..."

And ends:

"I beg to remain, Sir, Your most humble and obedient servant..."

He wasn't. 'Humble and obedient' that is. He outranked me and he knew it.

That was my letter of appointment dated 1962. By 1966 'My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty" were as dead as Samuel Pepys and I was part of the Ministry of Defence (Navy). It doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

Don't feel bad Og.. I never was in the military... missed by the skin of my teeth! had a draft number of 169 and they took everyone 168 and under.

Then they hired me to write the guidance and control manuals of a space vehicle... now if I tol ya which one i'd have to go across the ocean and kill ya.

suffice it to say.. those buggers went bang in a big way (usually when they launched rather than makin it to any kinda landing).

They didn't think me fit to cary a rifle.. so they gave me a nuke.... makes some kinda twisted sence don't it?

I was never, officially, in the military either. I was a civil servant of officer grade in the Admiralty. I had the equivalent rank of Naval Lieutenant-Commander when appointed - Not bad for an 18 year old but most of those who took the examination did so as Oxbridge postgraduates at age 23 onwards. I scraped a pass, ranked 249 out of 250 who qualified, and the only candidate of 1500 who didn't have his degree.

As for what I was in unofficially? The Official Secrets Act still applies.

Me, I was a bullet launcher operator. I'd tell you all about it, but then I wouldn't have to kill you, you'd already be bored to death. :)

Og,

I join DP in congratulating you on the family success. It's pretty obvious those girl children took after their mother.

There's time yet for the only male to catch up. My father didn't start to study for his first degree until he was 80. He passed but decided against continuing for the Masters and Doctorate to add to the honorary doctorates he already had.

I was offered an honorary doctorate but decided to pass. I was embarrassing my employers enough by being in their opinion 'overqualified' for the job I was doing.

In an earlier post, one of my colleagues retired and decided to take a job as a laboratory assistant in his local High School. He had been a Governor of the school and knew they couldn't get anyone competent for the salary they could offer. The personnel department wrote to me for a reference asking whether I considered he was qualified to set up High School science equipment. I took pleasure in replying including the full statements of his current qualifications that included Professor Emeritus at three Universities, Chartered Engineer, Editor of two Chemical journals, Honorary Brewmaster, Fellow of several learned societies including the Royal Society, etc...

The personnel department then had to ask the head of the Science department at the school to translate some of the titles. He got the job.

They just did a troll sweep sometime this morning and I lost 7 1 bombs....

Sure helped the averages and brought the stories back in line with where I thought they should be..... all 4 have their little red H but i haven't had the time to see where they are on the tops lists

Maybe later after I get a little sleep, been up abot 36 hours on 4 hours sleep.... even the keys on my lap top are fuzzy and keep moving out from under my fingers...

My story gained .02 in the sweep.

I take some comfort in that everybody's scores are low but, hell it still hurts *LOL*

ALL RIGHT, PEOPLE!

Who's been jacking around with the numbers? DP, you're suspect number one, but I'm figuring Rad may be the enforcer, Og the twisted mind (such as it is) behind the operation, with English Lady starring as, what else, The Moll.

These were my totals yesterday morning:
score 4:00, votes 63, views 9000

These are my current totals:
score 4:42, votes 57, views 9280

It's a conspiracy, I tell you, to deny me a shot at last place. :)

Truth be told it's probably a good sign I had about as many I bombs as Rad. Maybe someone has it in for Texas writers. But now I've gone from a decent shot at last place to my usual spot muddling around in mediocrity. sigh

ps: Now that vol four of the AH Anthology is filled and I'm caught up on crits, I'm about to start reading contest stories. I'm a slow reader (matches the brain activity) so let me know if there are any needing votes to qualify and I'll be sure to catch them. bb

Hey, women, I'm not that easy. It'll take at least some batting of the eyelashes to get whatever you want from me. :)

Okay, I'll use my imagination while you use up hubby. PM it my way if you're so inclined.

 RF, just let me read it over the once, try and get most of the really obvious stuff out then it's all yours gorgeous!

Sunny Summer Sex in the Shower has just been submitted, just waiting on Laurel to give it the A-Ok :)

thanks Rumply-Pumply, not only is he sweet and charming, he's clever too!

Welllll.... I'm not gonna go through that again for a while... but the sweep actually dropped my score for airplane....

the funny escaped unharmed and still stands right around 3.0... last place be mine!

RF... unlike my work.. I've never seen one of yours that should compete for last!

smiles.. but with a 3.28 with 32 votes and over 9,000 views .. the assult on a nudist camp.. is a cinch for last!!!!! I got a lock... more 1 bombs please!!!!

You're more than welcome, EL. But I guess this just proves old Abe Lincoln was right about fooking some of the people. :)

DP, I'm in awe of your awful score. Well, I was runner-up for first place in the Earth Day contest. Maybe I've still got a shot at being runner-down for last place in the Earth Day competition.

Sirhugs, you and TxRad need to get that circle-jerk squared away, so to speak.
