I found the infamous Magic lotion at Target and I was confused with the "for black men" label.

Is it safe for women's sensitive areas?

Do you prefer powder or lotion?

And how long does that horrible odor stay with you?

It can irritate if you leave it on too long. Be careful with that.

We've used both lotion and powder. Either works well. Lotion is more convenient.

I'm sure Cheyenne will be along to give you a complete and detailed recommendation.

Until then, do a search for Magic lotion, there are numerous threads devoted to the use.

And the best advice -- DO the patch test.

Get this..

my local WalMart doesn't carry Magic.. I looked in both the male and the female hair removal section.. then i asked a handy dandy sales associate.. She said.. and i quote "We don't carry that, it's for black men, and there just isn't enough of them around here."

I know of atleast 10 in the county (i'm sure there are more, but i don't "know" them)....

I guess i'll drive to another town.. and look for it at Target.. I'm wondering if WalMart is worth the $300 a week I spend there..

LOL

I'm curious to find out why it is for black men only.

Chanaud,

I think it's simply marketed towards black men because there was a market niche open. So far, I've only used it on my legs and above my upper lip, with little irritation.

It is a harsh chemical though. Depilatories essentially desolve the hair. So be careful with it. I've used other kinds on my nether-regions and got a tiny bit on my inner labia. Fucking hurt for days. Personally, I'll have my husband apply it and lay motionless until it's time to wash it off.

Magic Shave was formulated (and is marketed) to deal with shaving bumps and sensitive skin that plague many black men. However, "short and curly" hair causes the same problems no matter where or on whom it grows.

(Yes, I know not everyone has curly pubic hair, but those that do have curls are prone to the same ingrown hair problem as black men are.)

There are several different formulations of Magic Shave on the shelves at the local Walgreens. It would seem logical to start trying the mildest ones first and moving up to the stronger varieties only of needed. From reading the labels, it appears that the lotion form has moisturizers that the powder form doesn't and, from what I've read here, doesn't smell as bad as the powder form.

Harold! You mean we haven't converted you to being a customer yet??? We need to get you some personal experience with the product! ;)

I've never used it, but I want to. What is the exact name of the product?

Magic Cream or Magic Powder. That is the name.

Yup from washington also so I know what ya mean

OK, a little bit of history.

The company that created Magic, Carson, Inc., was a black owned company that developed products for black hair care (most notably Dark -N- Lovely No Lye Relaxer and Afro Sheen).

The Magic Shave line was developed specifically because many black men got wicked bad bumps from shaving with a razor, so much so that many opted not to shave rather than endure the discomfort. The product was created to address their grooming needs.

Formally, Magic was only available primarily in areas with a high concentration of black people (deep south, some urban centers), but was not widely available.

Recently (relatively speaking), the company was purchased by L'Oreal, which had the muscle and economic might to move it into the mainstream, at least with respect to making commercially available in less traditional venues.

I still don't think any of the advertising campaigns are targeted toward anyone other than black men, but that doesn't mean its not applicable. As WH said, it is supposedly effective for any situation involving tight, curly hair.

Try a hair care supply store, such as Sally's Beauty Supply. I can't find it in regular stores here (like Wal-Mart, K-mart, and Target), but I did find it there.

We have the same basic issue that the Wal-mart employee stated. if there isn't a large enough market, then they can't be certain a product will sell, so rather then take a loss, they just don't carry it.

Juspar sent me some Magic lotion.... I'm lovin' it. It's a heck of a lot better than Nair.

What prevented me from buying the lotion was the odor. How long does it stay with you?

That is too bad because I tried Magic cream and found it only slightly better than shaving with regards to removing hair, and no better with regards to the time it takes for the hair to come back.

Also, you have to be very careful about how long you leave it on as it can burn the skin if left on for 5 minutes too long.

I wanted something that would result in the "stubbies" after a few days to a week, and Magic wasn't it. :(

Yeah, tho odor is not very nice, but I usually take a shower afterwards and that gets rid of most of it.
