Where do Laurel and Manu get the money for the winners of the Monthly and Special Contests?

Do us authors donate into a big pot and they then pay it out.

Could us authors all get together and do prizes for "unofficial contests" like Geek Pride?

I know that most of y'all have been here far longer than myself, LOL.

The site runs of advertizing revenue as far as I can gather/ No one donates a thing, it's free for writers and readers, altho we provide the content, obviously.

Its their money from the income they make here. I suppose something could be set up to create a prize fund for an author sponsored event, but can you imagine the amount of drama that would create? why should they hold the money, how do we know we're getting all of it how....ugh

L&M find the money themselves, presumably out of whatever revenue this site makes. (Or maybe they're independently wealthy, IDK.)

It could be done but I expect it'd end in tears. Authors have a certain propensity for drama, especially when it comes to competitions, and it'd be too easy for accusations of dishonesty/bloc voting/etc. to get thrown around.

I have noticed that some authors on here are "drama queens". LOL.

I'd like to think that we could come together and be able to find a way to work together.

I'm sure there would be some drama. LOL.

I like to think that we'd be able to work together on something like this.

You're a glass half full kinda guy!
For those of us who have been here a long time we know what will happen. Look at how much BS goes on in the regular contests over a small pay out and a blue H. The author sponsored contests avoid a lot of that because there is no payout, its a themed writing exercise, with no real competitive angle.

Technically it would be easy for someone to take donations for a payout through paypal, then payout the winners, but initial argument is who does that, I trust them, but so and so does not. Why should they do it, why can't I do it...how do we know they lied about how much they collected....etc.

As someone else said authors can be a major drama queens-or kings-we've seen a lot of it.

I think you're wrong.

I also think there's no need. The events get plenty of entries even without a prize, and most of the people who enter the contests don't honestly expect to win. I suspect the "money payouts" don't actually motivate all that many submissions.

I said this in the Nude Day contest which I'll be passing on. For me contests aren't about money-everything I've won I pass on to local animal shelters, but I am competitive, not cheat or sore loser or get crazy level, but my simple philosophy is if you're not in to win, don't get in.

I used to enter all of them, now its here and there because I focus more on the pay market, but when I enter and place-I came in third for April Fools-I won't enter another until I'm eligible. But I see everything as a competition against myself and don't look at anyone else. If my story is good enough then it doesn't matter what they do, same with pool and dart leagues, I play my best game good for you if you're better I'll get you next time.

Guess without anything on the line I lose interest, but its all about placing, not the money or the vaunted blue W, although they are shiny....ohhh shiny, wait, what?

I'm glad you admit this. I'm competitive, too. I've always been competitive. In my job, in my hobbies, in my athletic activities, and in my writing. I'm a big believer in competition. I think it brings out the best in people, even in something kinky and crazy like writing for Literotica. Some people get freaked out about competition, but I think it's great--to put yourself out there, risking failure and falling on your face. Competition is like a whetstone on a knife. It makes you sharper.

The money is totally unimportant. A $150 prize check isn't something to spend any time thinking about. But winning matters.

I haven't won or placed in a Literotica competition yet, but I'd like to. I'm going to keep trying, and I think it will make me write better.

The voting is so loose and the gaming so bad on the current contests that I've consistently opined that the money attached to all contests here just detracts from them and makes people less than they should be. I've placed under various contests, but I've never taken the money. So, no, I wouldn't be happy to see monetary awards extended to user-sponsored contests. Most of them are writing exercises anyway, not designating any winners. Doing the exercise is the win.

I completely get and understand your POV.

I'd love to find a way to get paid for my writing.

I got a lot of stuff already written, I just don't know the who, what and how.

I agree.
Competition drives me as well.

I can see your POV.

These prizes, with sincere thanks to the owners, are tokens. They’re nice, but are rather like being kissed by a maiden aunt. Nobody, I sincerely hope, is so desperate, so hard up, that they are staying up all night with a pencil in hopes of paying rent by winning.

And, as KeithD has noted so correctly, the voting process is way bent. Offering more prizes would only offer the usual suspects further incentive for one-bombing, packed voting, etc. On a personal note, I don’t think I would be happy contributing to a bet in a game so easily swayed.

Thanks for the idea, but no.

I don't think anyone here either is paying their rent from here, LOL.

I've been "one-bombed" myself because I angered people.

Couple of years before you came here for a little more than a year stretch at least one member of a certain group always placed, took turns even. They'd mastered the formulas and games to do so. All the drama led to the AH Mod being created because until then we never had one.

Worth noting the site was no help saying nothing was amiss, culminating when one of the members finally admitted what they were doing, two posts later in the same thread Laurel said "there is no group and no manipulating" as always siding with the trouble. But things didn't exactly pan out for the cabal as infighting, egos and Melrose place style drama and lechery burned it down.

Since then there's still the usual crap, but nothing like it ever was. But personally I never saw the point, as I said I'm competitive and where's the pride in cheating to win anything? As Simon mentioned and for $150? You need that money so bad you need to cheat, then take it because I feel bad for you. Imagine if it was more substantial? Like $500 or more....ugh.

Well, first, I preferred Beverly Hills 90210 over Melrose Place    (I have 3 sisters, I was always outvoted).

I didn't intend to rankle any feathers, LOL.

I was curious about giving a little more scratch, for putting in the work that makes the site go.
