Log off automatically

Is there any way to tweak windows to log you off automatically after a designated time period.... or even better to log you off instead of the screen saver popping up?

I there isn't any way native to windows (up through WIN2K) to set a user time limit or no-activity aoutomatic logout. There probably is a utility somewhere online that can do it.

Is there some reason that just setting the screenaver password won't do what you need?

Depending on what you want to accomplish:

If you have fast user switching enabled in win XP, your screen saver settings (in control panel>Display>Screen Saver) will have a checkbox marked "On Resume, display Welcome screen".

If not, it'll say "On resume, password protect". In either case, your current processes will still be running, but either of these may help you anyway.

This PC is a common use desktop at work. We use software that is pretty RAM intensive. The processes still running when the screensaver time out really slow down anyone else who needs to use the PC. I found a screensave utility that logs the user off when the screensaver times out. It's supposed to close any open software and log the user off. It's far less than perfect though.


Any other ideas?

You know at a retired Army guy, I believe that "Negative Reinforcement" is the answer to most problems. Unfortunately, my boss would disapprove of me holding a blanket party........

I'm retired Air Force, so my idea of negative reinforcement is lightly less physical than yours.

Still it does sound to me like your problem is not something that is going to be really solved with a utility to cover for workers who aren't following procedure; that just masks your real problem.

How bout the Power schemes in Display Properties? It'll set your computer to go into Hibernate, or just goto sleep after a certain amt of time. I dunno what the difference in Hibernate and Standby are... but it'll do it after a certain amt of time. I have Win2k and it's on there. So maybe you could try that?

Hibernate powers down everything except the interrupt controller that detects the signal to power back up.

Standby just powers down the display, disk drives, and applications processing -- the operating system is still processing and executing timed events and such.

However, both are essentially screensavers and return to the desktop and applications that were in the foreground when they activated.

Note that it is designed to log off a user after a period of inactivity. That is the trigger.
