I wish my detector were better, would save so much time!

I'm cautious by nature, not letting many get to close. I'm also very loyal until you do me wrong....then, you're out the door. :D

I suck at the detector. I tend to think there's good in everyone.
Lit has made me grow balls.

Happy Tuesday, although it seems Monday-esque. How good is your bullshit detector? How do you weed out the pretender/players from the genuine types? I realize I am asking you to reveal trade secrets that my jeopardize your "detector" but I think it's one of the hardest things about lit.

Like in real life, it's a slow build up of trust once you communicate. I also use some of the folks that I trust here sort of like I would a reviewer or critic: if their opinion of someone seems high then it's worth a shot to get to know them. If I see a lot of negatives; I avoid them. I would say that most of the people who post in this thread are folks whose opinions I would rely on.

My one post for the day! After my first time being completely taken in by someone here, I just learned not to get too invested emotionally, and to take everything very not-so-seriously. I have friends I feel I can trust now that I've talked to for a long time, and letting that trust build slowly is, I think, the key.

My telling Jenny her actions were wrong as good natured, playful fun but there are those who think it's their place to dispense their opinion to others as fact. I've never understood those who believe that their opinion is "correct" or "best" and insist on sharing and sometimes ridiculing others based on said opinion. Here's my tip for today, unless expressly requested, avoided sharing your opinion with the intent of trying to persuade another into changing theirs.

But that is what some people think a discussion is!
This are the people my B.S detector detects best.

*pouts* But Chained, of course my opinion is always best and correctest?

I'd like to be able to say it doesn't matter if people lie about who/what they are, but in most serious discussions it does or what's the point of discussing at all? If someone posts a question then let them beware and often other posters will chip in to challenge BS answers. All the same, I do wonder if some people are mislead but… it's a tough old world innit? *shrugs*

Opinions can be aired without necessarily seeking to change someone else's POV … unless it's on the GB

Actually, I believe that I do understand those people. I understand them and avoid them.

I don't entirely agree with that. Opinions are tricky territory, for sure, but for me there's a potential "win-win" in achieving mutual understanding and possible synthesis of views that initially appear to be in complete opposition and aren't deeply entrenched. In this spirit, I believe that it can be legitimate to present an alternative point of view, as long as it's done in a respectful, listening and constructive way. Indeed, that's what I'm attempting to do here. ;)

I completely agree with ChainedUp though, that if one's outright intention is unequivocally to change someone else's opinion (as opposed to listening to it and then questioning it positively), then that's best left alone. Indeed, I would encourage anyone who is tempted to do that to take a closer look at their own motivations first. For that reason, opinions on politics and religion are generally on my "don't go there" list.

How did I do? :)
.

To clarify, I was referring to those whose express intent is change opinions. I'm a big fan of healthy debate. I don't mind differing opinions and I don't mind someone trying to explain their point of view, but I do mind people trying to tell me that my opinion is any less valuable/worthy than theirs.

I think we’re pretty much just a collection of opinions. I think chocolate ice cream tastes better than vanilla, fried chicken is better than barbequed hamburgers, and in my opinion, coming in a close second in an orgasm race is always best. I’ve always found it curious why people seem to get offended if your opinion or tastes differ. It really could come down to having to be “right” even if there is no such thing, depending on the opinions in question. If I had to throw out a theory, I’d guess it’s an ego thing, and a fragile one at that.

What course of action to take with them? Debate, mock, or ignore? Now there's the dilemma.

I agree, unless we're talking politics. Then any opinion that disagrees with mine is less worthy. lol ;)

The healthy exchange of opinions is, to a large degree, what makes the internet interesting to me. That, and the stories people tell about how they became who they are. I like the deeper dive and try and skip the shallow part. I like it when people express their opinion and tell how or why they came too it. Being in the computer business I've been online since the dawn of the internet and I could probably count on one hand the times I've seen someone change their opinion on something they already held a strong opinion on. Folks change at the edges, in the unformed places of their psyche. From a Litiquette point of view...good Litiquette is to express honestly, discuss openly, and politely bow out of the crazy - just like life. :)

Throwback Thursday. Means you either throw back a couple of stiff drinks, throw your partner on the bed and take them, or post a pic of yourself back in the day. For me, I'll take option #2

Speaking of social media, I presume all my Litiquette-ville friends are involved with social media. And that it's a pretty straight laced, vanilla, proper existence. If you had to give up either Lit or the more traditional social media platforms, which would you choose to keep?

A difficult question, Chained.

It is an easy choice between Lit and Facebook: Lit wins.
Between Lit and services like Skype and Yahoo, I don't know which one would win.
Between Lit and going back to snail-mail, E-mail wins.

I would love option 2, with a bit of number 1.

This feels like an easy question to jump back into litequette (seems much can fly by in a week or two).
Throwback Thursday....well I'd love option two but it seems off my reachable radar. Throwback pics come in as a doable and likely. As for a stiff drink....yum...but only if I had someone to enjoy it with...if not it'll wait until the weekend.
Social media...I only really facebook...lit would win if I had to pick. LinkedIn/ Pinterest I use for work...I'd like to pic lit over them but couldn't.
(Hey everyone)

I also choose option 2, but alas, it will be kept strictly to the realm of fantasy. So, perhaps I just need a few stiff drinks.

I don't FB much anymore, and I only use Twitter to follow news stories, etc. I don't tweet. And Pinterest confuses me, and don't get me started on Tumblr. So, I'd probably give them all up over Lit. At this point in my life, anyway.

I suppose I'd give up Facebook. I don't really use it all that much anyway. It's sort of a novelty for me. At one point I had about half of my friends' posts blocked, just because the stuff they say is annoying. I mean, nice people, ya know? And I don't mind being their friend, mainly so they can see the insightful shit that I write. But, I don't need to know that they sneezed or are drinking "THE BEST EVER STARBUX COFFEE LOL!!!!!"

There would be no hesitation to shutting Lit down. I'd much prefer being in close contact with my family, and pictures that are put up. If that was my only venue I'd probably delete a lot more 'friends' on there with their vague posts and cries for attention.
