Ahhhh, motive. Interesting topic. :D .....

For the most part I bumble around the place posting whatever's going through my mind at that time. There's no buffer between my inner monologue and my fingers. *shrug*

That's me, first thing in the morning.

That's when I bump the threads I like in the back pages, and post on things like the word games or what made me smile or name three things within your reach.

I save the actual interacting for later, after I've had my coffee. :D

Slipping in, trying to pretend I'm not late. Very similar to how I usually slip in.

A general question, would you rather cinverse with someone here that is extremely outgoing or is Lit best when you correspond with someone that chooses it's words carefully.

If you're too verbose it's all going to end up reading (to me) as blah blah blah. Keep it simple, not your thoughts.

How often when you post are you mindful of who will read it and what their reactions are. I expect a lot of "I post what I want and let the others worry about how they react" but I think there are a great many of us that know who is watching and what their reactions could be.
I don't usually worry about the reactions of any specific Litsters, but I do screen my postings for general risks of misunderstandings or touching on sensitivities. For example, my sense of humour in real life is quite off-the-wall, naughty and dark, but I tend to rein in those elements here because they probably aren't everyone's cup of tea.

Sometimes I wonder whether I ought to post more freely, as I don't believe I'm in much danger of leaving a trail of ill-feeling in my wake. Indeed, by far the most common outcome of my postings is no reaction at all! :D

It depends. There used to be a certain someone here who would make it difficult for me to post certain things, and that was just ridiculous and pisses me off just thinking about it. It's been quite liberating now that I no longer talk to him.

I would never post anything that I thought would hurt someone's feelings - someone I'm friends with or otherwise.

I do sometimes post cryptic things meant for a specific person. That's fun. ;)

I have a sense of who is following what I post. Sometimes I leave secret messages that they will get. It's quite fun & flirty!

Other times I may get fired up about a topic

Well that wasn't much of an exciting topic.

I'm usually only concerned with that when I'm flirting with someone and want them to see it.. or when I say something I know will totally make them laugh. If I need to trash someone, I'll usually just say it to them in a post.

Unless I am playing with someone and know they will read my post, I don't usually consider what people will think. I generally try not to say anything hurtful, be positive if I can, humorous if I can think of anything. If it's an opinion I just aim for honest, and hopefully thoughtful. I don't think anyone really follows my posts so I haven't ever tried to use them to send messages. If there is someone I want to send a message to, I'll just use PM's.

I tend to write my posts honestly, and don't think too much about what others think.

You can't please everyone after all....but being yourself is the best way to be...at least thats what I think!

what he said....

I’m more of a running commentary kind of guy. Half my comments are Lit related and half are just comments for no particular reason but to toss my words in the wind. I’m not too concerned how they’re taken. All you’re going to do if you get bent out of shape about a few trivial words on a porn site is make me laugh and get yourself put in the “drama queen/king” camp. I use the quote function when I want to have a conversation with a particular Litster. Flirting costs extra.

I don't post with the intent of if someone is trolling my posts. I'm pretty positive no one is seeking out some secret relevance to another Litster or post. I say what I will with no hesitation.

Here is something that's been often on my mind for years. Do others lurk and not post because they just don't want to interact beyond a post?

I usually am mindful of what I post. I enjoy making witty remarks and contributing funny comments, so I think a bit about it. Not too much though, since I also love being spontaneous, and like just going with the flow.

I'd go with the Garden Party philosophy: you can't please everyone, so you've gotta please yourself.

Hmmm, I think the subject changed midsentence

Ah... yes... You can't trust the weathermen -- not in the summer. *nods*

^-- This. :)

I sometimes refrain from posting because I'm not sure whether my presence will be welcomed in what appears to be a tightly-knit group. I haven't avoided posting because I don't want to receive follow-ups from someone in a thread -- but, then again, I'm not a woman (I imagine that's a relevant part of this scenario).

That sums me up quite well. I'd prefer anyone looking through my posts to see more substantial, valuable and self-defining contributions from me than, say, a series of number-only postings to the Battle of the Sexes thread*.

* I'm not picking on that thread specifically (indeed, I do post in there myself sometimes) but hopefully you get my general point that threads of that type aren't particularly useful for getting to know people.

Lurkers. Aquagal brought up a good topic. Why do lurkers stay lurkers? For me, I lurked for a while just to see if I could get a better handle on what was going on. There's a rhythm and a pace to the PG that takes a little bit to fully understand. But the life-long lurkers, why not join in?

I'm not a life-long lurker, so I'd have to guess, but I think for some it's a safety or privacy issue. It's one thing to view and read porn online...but a different ballgame to interact. I wasn't planning on ever chatting at first, but I would have missed out on meeting some really special people if I never had.

There is, and lately it is painfully slow. When I first came here the board was lightning fast compared to the pace it has now. In some ways that was confusing and crazy, but it was fun if you were able to jump and connect with some people. Now, you jump in a thread and nothing happens for a hour.

It certainly has changed. I think this is true of all the Lit groups and not just the PG. The GB, AmPc Lng, and others. The board as a whole has a much slower pace now then it did a few years ago.

I'd agree with Renee. I think for quite a few of the lurkers they are simply not looking for a connection - they read the boards like we would read a magazine. Interesting (perhaps), entertaining (perhaps), arousing (perhaps)...and then when they are finished they simply close the cover. I would also suspect there is a smaller percentage that would like to participate, but just don't quite know where to start.

The long time lurkers are an odd idea to me, I was referring to lurking for even a prolific poster. When I had open PMs, I'll be honest to say, I at times just enjoyed posting in various threads, flitting around where I wanted, not wanting to carry on a conversation in a PM because someone on the other end was waiting for a response. If I ignored a sitting PM for a few hours when I had time to properly respond then I'd be questioned about being seen posting, why weren't their PM's being answered?

Since I started out a member <tee hee... member> I'm not sure- would there be any benefit to joining just to read the stories? If there is, then I could see someone just doing that, then maybe venturing over to the forum for a quick peek.

Ah... I understand now the context to your question. That hadn't occurred to me before. Isn't that a bit stalker-ish? Now I'm worried that people who send me a PM might feel put out if I take time to compose them a thoughtful reply.

I, too, lurked here for a while before I started posting. I have learned from other forums that it's worthwhile to acclimatise and check out the locale before wading in too deeply. There always seem to be subtle unspoken protocols in addition to the formal rules and guidelines; one might even call these "Litiquette". :D

My first post was an introductory one in the New faces, come say hello... thread. It seemed to go down okay (no scorch marks!) and that encouraged me to carry on. :)

I know that lurkers on some forums have been put off posting because they have seen first-time posters being set upon by a pack of wolves. That wouldn't happen here, though, would it?

No, I don't believe so. I'm not stalking anyone in particular, I just meant at times I didn't want to carry on a conversation.

Sorry... I didn't explain myself very well. :(

I didn't mean that you are stalking anyone. I just felt that it was a bit stalker-ish for someone else to watch your postings and then call you out on not replying to their PM on this basis. Perhaps I'm overreacting. :)

The etiquette of posting in Lit is really pretty loose and easy, like most the people here ;)
Speak for yourself :D

When two people are having an exchange in a thread, when is appropriate to jump in, if at all?

Whenever you like - it's a public forum. If you don't want to be interrupted then to coin a phrase "get a room" :)

This is what I've heard from folks too. They send PMs and chat, etc. but rarely (if ever) post. Just a comfort level with having anything out there publicly that could be linked to them in real life. Makes sense to me.
