Happy Mother's Day! There's something about the unconditional love between a mother and her child. And yet I would say relationships here at Lit are anything if not conditional maybe even more so than RL. I think we set clearer definitions here for what we want, fail to meet those conditions and it's on to the next. Is my view clouded on this?
Good morning. Ever have a day when you're pretty sure you've lost all control of how it will unfold. I've noticed that Lit can take a similar path, just when you think you've got a handle on the place, you realize you realize you really don't. The question becomes do you expect to have more control of RL or of online?
As evening sets in, I've been wondering; we tend to stay at lit, or come looking, for engaging conversation of whatever ilk interests you, naughty or nice. But, if we all do that, some of us have to be that engaging person others are looking for. Now, toss modesty aside, do you consider yourself engaging or a someone searching for that spark.
I think that I'm the engaging type, I tend to lead conversations rather than follow.
Happy Tuesday everyone.
The first move. It's quite possibly as nerve racking here as it is in real life. Knowing when is the right time, wanting to make sure it's well received, doesn't feel clumsy, isn't too early, isn't too late, is at the proper level. Looking for that first subtle clue, that the other person seems accepting. Or was that actually your partner's "first move". Hoping that your new friend is flattered/pleased and not out off.
It never gets any easier, does it?

There are some threads I look at and immediately I know I have no idea what's going on. Sometimes scrolling back helps, sometimes it really doesn't. If it's a thread I frequent sometimes I'll try and sort out what is going on, sometimes I just leave and come back later, and sometimes I will PM someone to ask what's going on. And to be honest, sometimes I just reevaluate the whole thread and decide I'm no longer interested. What approached do you take?
My first move is usually to rewind to the very start of the thread to see what the OP had to say by way of context. Unfortunately, there are quite a few examples where the topic has drifted considerably since then and the thread has degenerated into knowing banter between its inmates (or, from my perspective, noise*). In those cases, I just move on rather than interrupt the party. There are some threads I look at and immediately I know I have no idea what's going on. I often take a peek a few pages back and see if I can catch up. If not, I usually just make my way elsewhere. I come here for short periods of time off and on during the day, so I try not to get tangled up in complicated or in depth threads. I enjoy popping in here to read, but rarely have the time to answer anything to my own satisfaction. Today is a pleasant exception, so I decided to add my thoughts.![]()
If I can't figure out what's going on in a span of about 45 seconds, I skip the thread entirely. If it's really confusing, I just assume the posters are all buddies and in on a joke I'm not, so I don't bother with it.
I just look to see where VV's been posting and go there![]()
BWAHAHAHA!!! Yeah, cause I have such deep and intriguing insights.![]()

Talking specifically about the Playground. Pmann's observation is pretty accurate. The Playground seems to be all about either chasing down a plaything for the night, or trying to get noticed so your inbox starts getting double-teamed for the ego pick-me-up. It's a rare thread that has a consistent depth to it. Most fade away to be replaced by lighthearted flirt-fests. If you look through my somewhat cynical spectrum, just replace every other word with "want to skype?" and the thread will make perfect sense.
