Good morning! It's a slow news day, the ground isn't shaking, the skies aren't opening up and that plane is still missing. All that being said it might be busy in Lit. When you talk to your friends and the topic of being in lit, how big is your lie with regard to how much time you spend online? are you embarrassed by the amount of time? Or could you really care less?
The trouble with proclamations is they are easy to make but infinitely harder to maintain. I'm to the point of avoiding them, as 90% of the time they end in failure. I see them in Lit all the time. I suppose the ones that are maintained are never noticed, it's only the failed ones we notice.
So, here's my thought, let's do away with the proclamation and focus on the deed. If you feel the need to inform your close friends then PM them. Otherwise let your actions speak. Who's in?

I've been accused of hijacking with this post.....but it's where my mind went, so I don't think it really is hijacking!
Oh ya and....![]()
Yeah that was me. It probably wasn't a classic case of jacking but with the mood today, it could have become a tribute page to Scottish bands![]()
Which leads me to my next topic, thread jacking vs thread tangent.
For me and by extension, this thread, thread tangents are when the natural course of topic conversation deviates from the original topic to a different but related topic. And that's perfectly fine. It's a natural part of conversation. Thread jacking is when someone(s) derails the conversation with an unrelated topic for the purposes of stopping the thread. That's just rude and stupid. There are times that a conversation turns fun and it goes a little sideways for awhile, and that's okay as long as it finds it's way back.

Threads once started are no longer a single persons sole possession. Trying to control what is posted, who posts, why posts are made is simply a losing bet.
Threads run off topic. People become enamored with one another. Trolling happens.
It may be rude. It may be stupid. hell it may be exactly what is needed.
Thread hijackings are hard to get worked up over. At least for me anyhoo.
I disagree Spins. I think the OP has every right to try to keep the thread on task, especially one where the premise is to discuss topics. Lit is full of places where random thoughts and blurbs are the premise. The intent to derail serves no purpose in threads where there are topics. Be tangential, have fun, just don't be rude.

This is a semi public forum. Your 'rights' disappeared as soon as you created an account and agreed to participate in the forum.
Now you may have plenty of reasons to disagree with the direction a thread has taken and especially if that thread was created with a specific purpose, but trying to police it is simply not going to work. It may even drive the people who you feel are not participating in your thread the way you had hoped to drive the thread even further afield. You have no 'right' to prevent another person from posting however they wish. You have no right to dictate how the thread runs. You have no right to get pissy about it.
Reality is like that.
Of course it does not mean you do not have the same ability to shape, nudge, suggest, and offer shots of nice boobies to get folks to fall more in line with the topic you wish to discuss.
I just don't see it as something that is controllable and thus not something that should fall under etiquette.
Cause basically it all comes down to the same thing. If you like the person causing the topic to venture from the topic it is OK. If you don't like that person it is not OK.![]()
I disagree. Yes, there are no 'rights' to anything on Lit, but I'm thinking the OP has done a fairly good job at keeping the thread derailed for too long. He's kept a good flow. As to letting one do and not the other, on this thread only...I think he hasn't caused favoritism. Back a few pages there were a few pages with he and Thandi and he put a stop to it, willingly. There was no cause for it to do so, because he did or didn't like it or her, it just wasn't where he wanted his thread directed.

Each thread is it's own entity. Just a few weeks ago there was a late night take over of Jenny's? homeless Litsters, and it lasted a lot longer than she wanted and finally took it back to where she wanted. Others went off and created their own.
I have no clue what happened a few pages ago, or whether the OP is a good guy, bad guy, or anything in between.
No specific thread is being targeted.
The question was asked about threads in general and I do not believe any thread is the property of the original poster. You are putting it out there in hopes it catches on, but you have no inherent right to control what happens once it is put out there.
Does that suck. Sure. It can certainly suck. Can it be frustrating that it isn't going the way you want it to go? Absolutely. Can you try and get it back to where you wanted the thread to go? Nudge, suggest, bribe your way to doing so.
Being the 'police' of something is inherently tricky and I promise you more shit happens on this board (and any public forum) when folks get all protective over what they perceive as 'wrong' and people not 'playing by the rules' than anything else.
If you or anyone else wants to be offended then please do. I am really not trying to tell you how to feel or act or anything else.
Just figured I'd answer the question posed that might offer some sort of counter to the prevailing wisdom that something in the public is 'owned' by the first person who offered it.![]()
