Do you think kids should have an internet domain reserved and regulated for them?

Anyone else hear about the President signing into law the new domain extension?

Basically it's an extension regulated by the Government, ensuring there is no adult content/sites on the new extension.

What do you think of it?

I just hope they're not practicing for an adult version.

Anyone else getting tired of the government running our lives?

I do appreciate the support and help they give the community, but damn, we're not a bunch of morons. We should be able to monitor our own childrens' internet use, with the help of all the protection software out there.

I personally don't have a problem with a domain extension for kids only. It sure beats the hell out of having a domain extension for adults only.

Wouldn't that site be blocked if they had parental controls on? Just wondering, I've never used it.

As a teacher i think its important children are taught what the internet is and what it can be used for.

I agree with Wiggles, but unfortunately not all parents are that concerned about what their children see on the net (ive met quite a few).

And if the Government wasn't running our lives, what else would they do?? lol

Good debate question too.

I agree with Wiggles, but unfortunately not all parents are that concerned about what their children see on the net (ive met quite a few). How many of these parents have been on the internet? How many have been to www.stileproject.com ?

And if the Government wasn't running our lives, what else would they do?? lol Redwavetard would have a hayday with this one. IMO, they are providing a safe haven

Good debate question too.

I don't see why this is a problem. It's not government regulation of the Internet, it's the creation of a managed domain name.

How about ".xxx" or ".adult"?

Cities have zones set up for industry, agriculture and housing. Why not a similar "zoning" for the Internet?

At least it might keep them...

out of Literotica. They'll have their own playground where they can call each other fucktards to their little hearts' content...

".xxx" and ".sex" have already been proposed but the mere sight of the word sex sent shudders down the spines of Congressmens wives so they are currently looking for an alternative.

Now we have .biz, .name, .info in use so an adult domain should be on the way. ".adult" is a good proposal, by the way.

But not if it's regulated by your government.

It really does depend on who is doing the regulating.

If it goes ahead it'll be just as interesting to see what it allows as what it blocks. Can see it being used to peddle a governmentally approved lifestyle or being manipiulated by big business to thrust products into kids consciousness from a very early age.

I think the concept sounds good - I can take less responsibility for what my kids see and do on the internet knowing they are 'safe' at .kids.us... :)

I'll wait to see how it's implemented before passing judgement on whether I think it's any good.

I let the kids use the AOL kids which is fairly safe.

As long as they carry GoArmy.com banners...

This sounds like a target domain for every hacker in the known universe! As long as it isn't too P.C., it's worth a try as long as it's not mandatory. :D

I'm okay with a domain name for kids that's safe.

I'm not okay with government mandating, controlling, and directing it...

What if it becomes a political agenda tool like PBS where only certain thought content is allowed?

Read today that ICANN has several new domain names in the pipeline.
.aero
.museum
.pro
.coop

And after only 14 months .info had moved into 6th place in the domain market, right on the heels of .com, .net, .org, .de & .uk.

so, it is only a question of time before the .kids shows up, not to mention whatever domain the sex industry gets.
