Is the AH nothing more than the GB?

Should not an authors hangout be about ...well just that ... writing and authorial pursuits and topics related to them? Maybe someone was right for the wrong reasons a couple years ago. Maybe the AH does need a moderator, afterall.

To me, the AH is like your favourite coffee house, cafe, whatever, the place where you can drop in any time you like, alwyas find people to chat to, flirt, discuss a new story, talk about the weather, your family, topical items in the news, commiserate, laugh, cry.....Its comfortable, but can be testing. Its extremely supportive, and probably one of the best places I could think to spend my time.

In fact, I wish it really was a local place in RL, where I could do 'just what it says on the can'.........hangout.

I agree with the others, all the forums seem to go in cycles....we had a time since I've been here, when we had so many writing threads, it was hard to keep up with them all. At the moment, I guess we're all in a post-christmas slump, a hibernation kick, low energy levels, things in RL that take up much of our time......once the weather picks up, our spirits pick up...who knows what will appear on the boards again.

You are such a shit stirrer, Charlus.

I for one would be most upset if that happened. I love that this is a place to just chat to people about things but be able to exchange views on writing when needs be. Perhaps a board dedicated purely to writing issues would suit what you hope for, rather than a hangout for the authors... Because that's what this is - a place where the authors hang out. And authors are people too <pout>

People have already said most of what I would have said in reply to your original post, so I'll stick with my standard reply every time this comes up -

If you feel there aren't enough writing threads, start more of them.

I'm supposed to be writing and my editor is going to kick my ass...and since that's Imp, she IS going to see how I spent my time...

You can spend your time however you damned well please. I'm your editor, not your nanny.

agreed. she does so love this.

[threadjack] i can envision her as a teenager, bored with those around her who don't challenge her intellectually, she pulls the fire alarm to escape the droll. [/threadjack]

reply. i ditto what min says. i only add this: i do not believe that writers or any other 'occupation' focus' on that single subject. how damn boring would it be after a spell? (rhetorical question)

the intellectually elite bore and intimidate me and that is probably more to do with lack of understanding on my behalf. however, if all the threads on the AH had to do with writing and only writing, then i would be adrift in a sea. i believe the more i disect writing and look at all its parts, the more disenchanting it becomes for me. i write for escape .

And that, started all of this? Amazing!

And then I thought, what the hell is the GB? And I haven't looked yet, but I will, and even before I look, I have considered 'nuking' it and seeing who is left standing after the radiation dissipates.

But the more I skimmed through the thread, the more I thought of the Avatar of Charlieh, (I hate you if you are a guy) I wanted to glom onto....ah, never mind, you wouldn't understand anyway.

And I am not sure I can devote the time, but I love an interesting diversion and I may make a rather large splash in the GB pond should you be interested and have a wager on the results.

Bet on me. I never lose at anything.

Thanks Charlie, oh do I ever wish to nibble...sighs...

Is this where I say I'm a huge fan of nntic no matter if it's prose or poems or illustrated prose poems?

Now, :rose: get writing.
You make me want to kiss your orchid. :rose:

Possibly, you could ask Laurel to create another subgroup, like the visual arts subgroup, that could be dedicated to all things writerly and have a moderator to keep it clean. A serious place for serious writers. I suspect that the bulk of the traffic would remain on the AH though. But a seperate forum might encourage authors who are intimidated by the AH and really are more interested in developing the skills and knowledge needed to develop as writers.

Um. We have that already.

It's called the STORY DISCUSSION CIRCLE. It's moderated by fairly no-nonsense members (two of them!) and they have lots of discussions about authorly topics. Charley posts there, too. I don't understand why you want to make the AH into something that already exists over there?

I think what you may be lamenting is that people seem to want to talk about the color of their underwear over here in the AH rather than the difference between short stories and novellas?

Possibly just trying to be controversial? If people don't like it here they don't have to stick around.

Also - might I point out that this thread isn't much related to authorly subjects either? ;)

*snerk*

Sometimes I wonder if those who complain about "not enough writing" threads just want an excuse to not be writing? They're rather talk ABOUT writing than actually sit down and WRITE!? ;)

I tend to post on three boards, here, the playground and the GB. Akll have something to offer, mind you i usually get roughed up a little over in the GB, but then i like to put the gloves on once in awhile, just for the hell of it.
I have found lately that some of the more authorly characters from the GB have been venturing over to the AH..interesting.

Yeah, nothing wrong there...

Except that it's all so neat and tidy; threads vanish when the moderators tire of seeing them, and vanish for good. Except that there is a power thing there, a politics. In a word, it is moderated.
Jesus, what the fuck have you been smoking these days? When did any thread vanish from there because moderators tired of seeing them? Other than threads that don't belong there, as in spam, nothing is removed. Yes, it is moderated. There isn't a politics, though. There is a policy, yes. It's called Forum Rules, and is in place in the Author's Hangout as well.

Long live anarchy, the Sex Pistols kicked ass, but seriously, dude. You don't need to make up stories to stick it to The Man.

Writerly Threads

I consider that the contest support threads are writerly threads.

They encourage people to write and to submit stories, and deal with some of the issues that arise from contests.

If so, there is almost always an on-going writerly thread in the AH.

All you have to do is participate...

And then moan about the trolls.

A suggestion

If we're an author's hangout, one thing we should all be is story-tellers (surely?). Personally, I used to find new Literotica stories by reading things which looked promising on the 'New Stories' page, and then, if I liked the story, reading more by the same author. But as I've come to use the forums more, I've started to look for stories by people who's contributions here seem to be interesting or humorous or wise or quirky...

But, quite a lot of people don't put a link to their stories either in their profile page or their signature, so to find their stories you have to go through 'search'.

So - could I make a suggestion, or even a plea, to those who post here? Could I ask people to put a link to their stories into their signatures?

Story discussion circle isn't quite it, though. It has one topic only, as far as I can see- would I be able to post my questions about writing programs and plotting on that forum?
And there's that long queue, and I hate waiting... :p

Re; some of the other things that have come up here, this is the place I come to hang out, and yes, procrastinate. Mostly. It's different from GB in a couple of ways that have already been mentioned; it moves a little slower, and the median age, I think, is higher. And even though we have as many joke thread and random conversations here, they are being carried on by people who have writing on their minds, and that makes a huge difference to me.

As for Brinnie- Christ almighty! I put every single alt of hers on ignore- I just couldn't stand her spamming the boards, nor could I risk going into a thread and having one of her vomit-sex images come up bigger than full-size- not in my living room.

I have put some posters here on ignore- not because they deserve being ignored, but because I can't handle many political threads. If their posts come up in a thread, I can choose to look at it, and I often do.

Yes, you probably would. The queue is only for submitting your story to in-depth critique. ;)

I don't. ;)

The story discussion circle discusses specific stories for the most part. There are some threads that talk about broader topics, such as short stories vs novels. Quite honestly .. that forum intimidates the hell out of me.

Most do, just not necessarily labeled "my stories". Keep trying. In most cases something in their sig lines should take you to their member page. ;)

Where's the end of that queue?

A year or two ago, there was a practice or discussion thread every other week. I seem to recall WildSweetOne starting a few of them. (If I recall correctly she was the initial instigator of the award winning Snippetsville Series).

Now it seems that the only writerly threads (I claim personal invention of the word writerly) are the ones where people (Charley!) bemoan the loss of writerly threads.

What the AH needs is another clique thread. (Or a 'guess the author' thread The.)

Edited to add; Damn you gosling, I just noticed your thread.
