Most of those who denigrate the Green E (and there really seem to be very few who care enough to denigrate it) are, I think, competitive, grasping folks who will stop denigrating the Green E the moment they get one.

Coming from the guy who thinks author's who have mostly red H's are all cheating. Something tells me that would change if you were the one that had a high percentage of them.

He doesn't have any Green Es (but he has Ws--contest wins--and, sure, I'd love to have some of those and don't) and I have a bunch of Green Es, so, of course, he thinks they are worthless. Because his obsession doesn't permit anything I do to have value--and because he ain't got any.

Before even seeing what LC posted (I do have him on ignore--only saw what he posted in the quote you gave), I gave you a rundown on what I think about the Green E. So, you might consider that as what I think rather than swallowing LC's version of what I think.

Getting a W is very nice indeed. I think it's only in the godly sphere, though, on how caprious it is in a contest system with the integrity of swiss cheese.

W is a contest winner. There used to be monthly winners (3 per month based on best score) and themed contests, now its just the themed contests.

That...still doesn't narrow it down enough, I'm afraid.

I participated in one of the competitions and that was wonderful and I really enjoyed all the feedback and generosity in the other participants. I don't even think I remember who won, but I remember who was the most fun and supportive and helpful. I remember who read my story and gave me feedback and really made me think about how and why I write and how people read me and how I can improve that relationship.

But I'd be the first person to say that an Oggbashan E is more valuable than a Recidiva E.

It is not absolute. I fluked. I'd be completely disingenuous if I felt superior somehow. Oggbashan could probably get away with being falsely modest, but he wouldn't, he takes it too seriously and also wouldn't value himself higher based on ratings, but on how he critiqued his own work according to his serious assessment and that of his readers and peers. That's because he's dedicated and writes much more than I do and takes the craft much more seriously and I value his feedback and support. I wouldn't particularly care if he got straight 0's if I thought his stuff was amazing. It would indicate vigorous trolling, which also exists here.

The work is what matters, and the popularity contest is a sideshow. A fun and valuable and conversation-startey sideshow, but arguing over ratings is missing the point.

As to the he said she said he rated you lose you cheated, I also am not willing to do enough research, so I will avert my eyes as I also think it's irrelevant as to the subject of patience or lack thereof.

I'm not denigrating it, just giving it what I consider to be the proper context. It doesn't "mean" anything objective. So that's why when I see others (in this case you) mentioning it as a sign of achievement, I think...I'm not particularly achievey and I got one. I don't think I should have gotten one if it's that important. Since I got one, I assume it's a casual assessment based on mood and whim and whether or not it was different than the previous 43 stories that might have been complete drivel.

For all I know I got a Green E because I was the first one that day that didn't describe cup size.

I don't see where I lionized the Green E. That said, why wouldn't receiving praise for a story from the owner and editor of the Web site who processes all stories be something to give you a warm fuzzy? And, yes, I myself, am happier receiving praise for a story from the owner and editor of the Web site than I would in slipping in a win in a contest that has the integrity of swiss cheese--but I've never said I wouldn't love to get Ws too.

The Hs are very nice too--but they don't designate either my best stories or anyone elses. They too are subject to very intricate games on the Internet that have nothing to do with the quality of the story.

He constructs posts like this to try to establish himself as a writing guru--most often he does it by parsing guidance on writing given by some actual accomplished writer he's read. It's a classic "easy button" approach.

I grabbed at it because in the early days he said that the Green E was shit. Now he's trying to grab one the easy and slight-of-hand way. I think that's sort of delicious.

You're taking this well. As I noted, my reasoning wasn't just for you. If it had been, I would have PMed you. It was because JBJ designed this thread to put a notion in the heads of the readers in general here. This is his style of trying to establish credibility in writing that he doesn't want to actually work for. In challenging that, I'm making my case to the readers in general here, not just you.

If you want to feel violated and to get into a hissy fit over it, that's your problem. I'm not going to fight with you over it. You can believe whatever you want to believe.

There are two "facts" I see to this thread and are the ones I dealt with: JBJ has been caught with his pants down on claims of his writing achievements before (by Stella, not by me) and he has slipped in a claim on this thread on a writing credit that is totally unsupportable.

Them's the facts I was dealing with. No one else has come up with any "facts."
