Writings without Homes

I got the inclination to post something that was written over 4 years ago for Group Therapy, but it doesn't really have a home anywhere to post it. It's short, barely a page long in a ringed notebook, so I figured I'd create a thread for writings or stories without a "home" for others to share while sharing it. Feel free to post excerpts from stories that you abandoned or anything like that, if you want, too. This should be a thread for a place to share.

This, whatever it actually is, has no name; just the date it was written: 2-3-22. It is being posted as is, despite my compulsion to edit or tweak it when I notice things wrong with it.

The gnarled, twisted vine climbs the faded white and peeling lattice; a silky green and brown strand clinging—choking. Tendrils snake and wind seeking sustenance.

The house, such as it is, no more than a hovel. Less than, even. Barren lawn of browns. Faded, tattered shingles dangling from a corner. Desolate. Dreary. Dilapidated. Less than a shell of its past self, and more of a forgotten tomb.

There was beauty there, once. Laughter of children playing on green grass. Red roses on a white trellis. Black roof protecting occupants from weather, good and ill. Life. Happiness. Promise. Rot.

The rot and decay had always been there. Hidden from sight, sleeping beneath the surface. Entropy and time only brought it out quicker. The rot. The truth. The beauty only found in a memory.

The truth and the end. Beauty found in accepting an ending. The beauty and promise of a new beginning.

A bud, green and fresh, atop a gnarled twisted vine.

Is your goal for people to just post such excerpts, or to discuss them too? I guess my own thread has fired me up for discussion. 🤷‍♂️

With a few line modifications that would be a beautiful free verse poem.

People can discuss them. Part of sharing is discussing things, in my mind at least.

I considered that, but I posted it as I had written down (except a couple of punctuations that I just fixed instinctively). How would you change it?

I wouldn't change it. As a minimalistic poet, I would arrange it differently -

A gnarled vine
climbs the lattice,

green tendrils
gripping
the peeling white.

The house
has forgotten
its beauty.

Brown grass.

Tattered shingles.

A garden
gone quiet.

Once,
children ran here.

Roses climbed
the white trellis.

A roof held back
the rain.

There was laughter.

There was life.

There was rot.

It had always been there,
beneath the paint,
beneath the roses,
waiting.

Time
only made it visible.

Now,
only memory
remembers the beauty.

And perhaps
there is beauty
in the ending.

In letting go
of what was.

In what comes next.

A small green bud
opens

on the same
gnarled vine.

You are welcome. If you want to check my thread in the Poetry Forum where I convert micro fiction stories that I've written to free verse, feel free

I read that thread before. Didn't quite know how to contribute, especially since I'm more of a stream-of-consciousness/emotionally-driven "poet" and Depression/Anxiety just mostly means dampened emotions more than anything anymore. Used to get real bad and be able to write about it, now it's just... White. That's what the poem I wrote in Weekly Poem thread was about. Complacency and contentment killing creativity. Well, that and I was listening to a song and wanted to quote it in a poem. >.> Oop. Got sidetracked, lol.

If I was smarter, I'd have asked @anthrodisiac if I could made this a "Plot Bunny" adjacent thread, titled it something like 'Playground for Old Bunnies', and written some witty and (slightly) irreverent spiel about providing entertainment and love for some of our old, forgotten, or 'misplaced' (rather than abandoned) bunbuns. Alas, hindsight is like a cow's opinion: Moot. 😛

My thread is open to anyone - storyteller, poet, audio creator, etc. Feel free to contribute

It's Darlington Memorial Cemetery-adjacent, but I still think it's distinct enough to be its own thing. That's more for things you cut out and want to memorialize because you liked it but can't use it. This is more like a retirement home or out to pasture place to put snippets you aren't planning to publish, but still want to share. Hell, you can rewrite the OP and change the title of the thread, I don't claim exclusive rights on Plot Bunny Pen projects. PBP is a silly open-source hub that anyone can add to. Go for it :)
