Hurricane Check In Thread

I am so glad we had this Thread. It was so helpful. Whoever set this up should be congratulated!

I'm glad too... Even more glad to learn that Someplace, DT, BnB, and all the rest who checked in are fine... Now for the rest of them.

How's BB2 after the fall, though? Hanging in there okay? I'm really glad to hear that you people are okay. Thanks for letting us know.

Okay peeps...they're not much, but give you an idea of how things looked late morning today:

He's doing fine, thanks. Getting grouchy about wanting his cast off, so he must be feeling a little better.

How about we wait until the folks who were REALLY affected by this storm check in, like those who live in areas affected by mandatory evacuations, or flooding caused by a controlled release of a dam this afternoon?

I'd like to know the gal from Beaumont who ended up having to leave on short notice makes it home safe and sound.

FYI, people from my area who evacuated were asked to not return home until tomorrow. People from the west side of town were asked not to return home until Monday and people from the south and east were asked not to return until Tuesday.

The mayor asked employers to be understanding in the staggered return of workers. Most school systems are closed Monday and Tuesday to encourage people not to return too soon.

They've got to 1) keep the roads clear for military convoys taking fuel, food and equipment to the Beaumont/Port Arthur area to help the folks hardest hit get help right away and 2) let the gas tankers get down here and supply the stations before everyone hits the roads again and we end up in the same gridlock as going out.

It's going to be a few days before people get back from this.

Lake Charles,LA

Well, I think its safe to guess that Lake Charles,LA has blown away.
:(
Thank god I'm safe in AR for right now. I wonder when or if my university will open up, and if I will get paid for the full month or not.

Some footage showed the Isle of Capri Casino split in half on account of a barge floating into it. Not much else I've seen.

Good luck to those who are either trapped or missing.

We traveled together in a group (two cars) and our kitty.
We have no family to stay with around here, closest is STL and we didn't really want to drive that far North. Our hotel is nice, free highspeed internet is a plus!

So its a sort of forced vacation until we know just how bad the damage is. I'd expect our roof to be either gone or trees to bend over our house. :(

Not much is right. lol

Your car windows are hardly wet and the gutter fell down?

lol

The Keemah boardwalk sustained some damage (again) but other than trees down, I don't think the damage was that bad. The main thing coming back will be whether there's gasoline for the trip. I hope you get back soon to find everything as you left it!

Exactly. We didn't get hardly anything except wind and some rain. Worse thing for us was having power out -- a minor inconvenience in the entire scheme of things. Houston was basically spared when Rita turned to the east during the last day before landfall. The folks to the east and northeast (Beaumont, Port Arthur, Lake Charles and up along the Texas/Louisiana border) who were not expecting to be in the direct path until very late in the game, are the ones we need to worry over.

If you're talking about Eumie, she's in MO, so no worries. I'm not coming up with any other schoolteachers at the moment.

:ahem: i'm a teacher and i'm in texas...but i'm way up north. i'm absolutely fine.

You are a waste of air, seriously. Go to hell.

An apology to the thread, as this will be the last harsh comment I make.

Edited for clarification.

Well we will see who dies or needs disaster assistance first.

Damn handwringers expecting everyone else to pay for other's mistakes in living location.

We were supposed to have some friends whom were going to drive from Houston, but they decided to stay put. The next thing was that we got a call from another couple with a baby and couple of dogs them being en=route to Dallas! They were driving from Lake Charles, LA, but after 20 hours of driving they were not even half way here. Fortunately, they found a hotel to stay for the night but since then we have not been able to get in touch with them.

Our neighbor have some people staying with her, and we know some other people who have opened up their homes. Hotels are full I am told, and people can't go back yet. The good thing for the youngsters is that schools are closed!!!

Oregasm made it through Rita unscathed. Just thought you should know.

How long is this thing going to be stickied?
