Hurricane Check In Thread

Okay

Hey everybody Im cool. Im from Houston and was forced to evacuate due to the fact that I live in a low lying area. But the SOB's I worked for told me that if I didn't come in I was fired. So I said f-you and left. But other than that everything's cool. Nothin wrong with the house.

just got home. bit stinky. the parking lot is a mess but we do have basic services. we're fine. one helluva trip outa here. its a long sad story. i don't know if i'll ever be able to tell.

its changed me.

someone i can depend on other than the fucking local politicians to get my ass outa town fast.

Rita lesson #1...i am way too isolated.
Rita lesson #2...i need to do something about that...*sigh*

And add LESSON #3 for EVERYONE in this thread:

Get your hands on some county maps of all the little counties between where you live and at least two other major Texas metropolitan areas -- so you can navigate yourself around this state withOUT going on a major interstate.

THEN, get yourselves out there and make a few practice runs. Take a picnic lunch and a camera. Have some fun and enjoy the nice weather. But more importantly, notice the small towns and landmarks that might save your butt next time!

(just call me the Queen of Texas Road Trips!) :nana:

uh..that would require a car.
for those of us w/out personal transport we were dependent on the local authorities to evacuate us. thus the BUS RIDE THRU HELL. from here..50 school buses meandering thru east TX in search of a shelter that would welcome us. 36 hours on a school bus. turned away several times. finally landed in Canton, TX.
coupla days in Canton then onto Reunion Arena in Dallas, TX for 2 weeks. sharing space and facilites with up to 500 other people.
all in all a truly traumatic experience i will not repeat.
the sad thing is...loads of folks won't either. so next time a mandatory evacuation is called for in this county...be lotta folks staying in harm's way. probably a much higher body count.
i'm sure there'll be class action suites filed against the county and other local entities...to send us out there on a wild goose chase w/ no real plan. no calling ahead. and expect school district drivers to drive a bus overloaded w/ panicky people for 36 hours.
we actually took 'potty breaks' on the side of the highway...in the woods!
stores etc turned us away due to sheer mass of humanity. we had only the food and water we brought with us.
there were nursing infants. small children. elderly. medically fragile. you name it...they were there.
and there were deaths.
and there was trauma.

anyway....i'm getting past it. i'm sure others are as well.

and i know you meant well but...for some of us it will take much more than a drive in the country.

I heard from grungalunga today. He lost his house under 12 feet of water, and has been in a hotel with an internet filter.

He says, "do a google on 'mississippi river gulf outlet' - that is what killed st. bernard parish."

That is truly horrible and I'm very sorry you had to go through that. I am, however, very glad you were able to get out of harm's way and back here among us.

thanks.
i'm sure Katrina and Rita will be a part of our collective vocabulary and memory for a very long time to come. its amazing the continuing waves of impact...here locally the annual fair has been cancelled. hasn't been since WWII. i'm sure there will be political repercussions for the idiots responsible for the bus ride through Hell. i expect to see lawsuits ...wrongful death suits..for the (at least) 9 lives lost during that evacuation. Katrina may've gotten more press but Rita caused her own fair share of damage too. this year will definitely be one of note in the history books...locally and beyond.
and i survived it!

Home Again

I made it back to L.A. Helped out as best I could. Also helped salvage some stuff in N.O. I never thought Los Angeles would feel so good!!!!

It wasn't all work in Texas. I had some fun too ....

i can't believe Houston has provided some of the worse posters ever. except for me and D.T...and maybe BnB. Karen Kraft, what where you doing in H-Town, aren't you from L.A?

p.s i think i'm getting fired because i took a long evacution break.
:D what alot of boosheet.

Hi TANG.

Yah, back in L.A. again. I was in Houston and Austin, back and forth on a weekly basis the latter part of September and most of October. Where in Houston? The Super 8 motel on W. 34th, near the Denny's for the most part. Then, when I was in Austin (Exel Inn on I-35) I lost my room at the Super 8 and had to stay up the 290 when I went back to Houston. That sucked.

I'm happy to be back in L.A. again, that's for sure. Anything fun or exciting happen while I was away?

KK

Glad you're back among us. Was everything okay when you got back home?

i'm doing ok here in central FL, we got some wind and rain. some areas got some pretty bad flooding. but i was very lucky
