That's not the reason, of course. I can sell GM and lesbian and inspirational and espionage thriller. If I didn't separate authorship on those, I'd lose a lot of my readership in each category. So, the reason to separate is based on the response to the writing; it's not because of what I'm capable of writing or enjoying writing or can find a fan base for.
I really think your "do everyone a favor and stop writing" is out of line and a little inane.
Thousands of successful writers have written successfully outside of their public persona. Rowling just tried it and was outed--but she would have done just fine in that pen name if she hadn't and it's really out of line for you or anyone else to say she'd do everyone a favor by just stop writing.
