In some ways I fit the "norm" here. In other ways not.Borrowing Netzach's phraseology, I'd say that hetero = at-large normal, and everything else = niche-normal.
But the discussion of what's normal, average, or typical vs. not really misses the relevant point. Which is: abnormal, not-average, or atypical is not necessarily bad.
Not necessarily bad in the unethical sense, and not necessarily bad in the personally unhealthy sense.
If I say: "Joe is an abnormally strong guy," that's not a slam.
In some ways I fit the norm at any lesbian fern bar better than I fit in here-- in other ways, most emphatically not.
In some ways I fit in with the gay male leather Old Guard-- in other ways, not.
In some ways I fit in with the women's leather guard the best-- what there is of it, and those women have fought the same battles I have and share the same scars.
On the whole, I am pretty accustomed to being an outsider, and I'm pretty experienced in chewing out a me-shaped hole in whatever group I find. It's wunna them tough noogies. And I have some sympathy, but very little patience, with the folk who already have a hole shaped like themselves but complain about the fact that it's not lined with velvet or some damn thing.
Deal, people. Get over your selves. Leather is not a Hallmark friendship card.

However I don't think there's any special dignity or anything in saying it. It just amuses me. And people look at me funny if I say vagina, even in a scientific context. get over it folks 9_9
