Get Woke, Go Broke

My understanding is that Disney also tends to many services and infrastructure within their territory that will become the responsibility of the state.

It’s the wet dream of privatization. It looks great on paper but when the reality comes into action it has lots of unanticipated issues.

Oh the poor conflicted conservatives!
That is my understanding as well, meaning Disney has a choice to make.

They can pay taxes to the state and two counties, deal with painfully slow and cumbersome bureaucratic permitting processes with these entities, and rely on them for basic maintenance. They can also brace themselves for more non-Disney development in the district. New hotels, big box stores, affordable housing, etc. Anaheim East.

Or they can make amends before June, 2023 and retain control over the district, (although possibly under slightly less generous terms than they had under the 1967 deal.)

DeSantis made his point. Floridians support the parental rights legislation and will not be intimidated by woke corporations that have benefited from generous incentives granted over a half century ago.

Let’s check back in 2023 and see which door Woke Disney picks. In the meantime, mortgage your house and buy Disney stock. It’s a terrifically managed corporation that is way undervalued. Lol.

Lol.....sure it will....in what universe?

Jfc...there's a reason Disney takes that debt.....there's no county or company that holds the same amount of money

If you think citizens of the state won't take on anything, that's just dumb
The debt service, plus maintenance of roads, canals, and other vital infrastructure will be not financed by the 2 counties and the state. Disney will be taxed, and lose control over new development. Their worst nightmare is Anaheim East. New non-Disney hotels and commercial development, lots of new housing, etc.

This is annoyance for them to be sure, but this is far from a worst case scenario and the amount of taxes they would pay won't be equal to what they'll save in not being in charge of everything themselves.

I wouldn't mortgage my house, but I wouldn't do that if you'd told me twenty years ago what Netflix would be. There are far, far worse things.

I expect Disney to hold their ground and this will probably be found unconstitutional, it will definitely get challenged

What sort of amends does Disney have to make? Release Song of the South?

The crows in Dumbo, the little black centaur with braids in the Fantasia you have to sacrifice a village of virgins to obtain. I'm sure if I started digging through some of their other cartoons I could find some. It wasn't THAT long ago that we weren't woke at all in the states.

We should go back to before we were woke.

Please explain how exactly all that won’t be financed by the two counties. Really looking forward to at least one of you answering this question.

I'll wait to see how well that works out.

If the dissolution happens (which is questionable), the taxes currently paid to the district would paid to the counties.

“Florida state Rep. Randy Fine, R-Palm Bay, who has helped champion the bill, told CNBC on Thursday that local taxpayers would not pay more — and could actually benefit from Reedy Creek’s elimination. Fine said the tax revenue that Disney pays would be transferred to local government and could more than pay for the added services.

“Those taxes will continue to be paid,” he said. “They will just be paid to Orange and Osceola county instead of this special improvement district. The taxpayers could end up saving money because you’ve got duplicative services that are being provided by this special district that are already being done by those municipalities.”

My take is that this may cost Disney some money, but all they need is to make another Avengers or Star Wars movie to offset any losses this may cost them.

We'll see there isn't much reason to think Disney is spending money here rather than saving it as a whole.

It may get challenged. It will also fail if it is.

Disney did some really stupid shit and got hammered for it. I'm not sure they want to throw more gasoline on that dumpster fire. But, if they do, their stockholders could have something to say about it.

They could. IF they make a movie that isn't woke.

The problem is that they have high level people saying that they've been pushing the woke crap into everything as much as they can and that they plan on doing even more of it. Unless/until Disney makes an effort to rid the company of those attitudes (or put them back into the closet again) any new releases in the same vein will fail the same way the new "son" of Superman comic did. Recipe for failure otherwise.

Yeah, but my point is that Disney can easily remake any losses this can inflict upon them. They're the most successful movie studio in the business right now, with several of their films grossing over a billion worldwide. If Desantis's strategy here is to hit them where it hurts...this is only mosquito bite to them.

The same Randy Fine who takes money from Disney? I don’t know how any R does that with a straight face, but he’s wrong.

Disney already pays to the counties and then RCID taxes them on top of that. So the counties aren’t going to be getting any extra money, but will somehow have to cover all that infrastructure and debt.

Perhaps someone who has accurate information can tell us how the taxpayers won’t be on the hook for this.

What new laws are those?
Keep up with the conversation AARPy. ;)

We're talking about the new law republicans want to make where among other gag orders, it would be a crime for a teacher to discuss a student's untraditional family situation.

The Florida GOP must be thinking that government can handle social and infrastructure services more efficiently than private interests. 🤣

Lol.

You mean the laws that prohibit teachers from discussing their personal sex lives with minors? The ones that are right up there with the laws against selling porn to minors? Or allowing minors to drink? Or vote? Or smoke? Or any number of other laws which regulate the content that minors have access to?

Those laws? The ones that have been found to BE Constitutional?

LOL! Counselor, you might want to actually read that law. Or you could just keep commenting when you can’t keep up with the rest of the class.

Even if that had any truth to it which I doubt, they continue to make so much money from listening to those people pushing "Woke crap" that they'd have to be worst business people in the world to get rid of them or stop listening to them.

You need to take a few classes in how taxation works. And some in accounting too.

Disney pays RCID "taxes." Those "taxes" pay in part for the maintenance of the roads on PRIVATE PROPERTY. Those taxes also go toward paying the bonds Disney sold (which should rightfully be corporate bonds not public issued bonds but...???).

IF Disney now has to pay the county those same "taxes" then the money will be used for the same purposes (maintenance of roads/etc and paying the bonds). Disney should get dinged by now having to pay for their own maintenance on their private property as well as paying the taxes to the 2 counties which used to go to RCID.
