In baseball, a hitter who is successful 3 out of 10 times (a .300 hitter) is considered a good hitter. Yet if the weatherman is right on the forecast only 3 times out of 10 we talk about how bad he is.

One big difference is that it is very, very easy for a decent baseball player to go 0 for 10. The average person on the street is likely to go 0 for 1000 against good pitching. Depending on where someone lives, predicting the weather by gut-feeling and guesswork will find the average person being close to right a good chunk of the time.
