Earth Day Contest Support Thread

Uhm... I've been wandering around Lit a bit more than usual and this Earth Day story contest inspired me to finish a story I'd started ages ago.

Reading this thread I'm left to wonder if this is a serious contest or what?

And what are the specific requirements? I think I read Laurel's thread on it, but I don't recall seeing anything about length or specific subject matter (other than nature).

I've finished the first draft of my story and I wouldn't mind someone to take a peek at it. I'll do my own edits once the steam from the monitor has cleared. ;)

It's a different little story and I'm not entirely sure what the reactions will be. I think it fits in with Earth Day.

We are serious...

Ignore the banter.

The Earth Day Contest is a serious contest but some of us in the Author's Hangout know that we can't win because we don't write stories to wank to.

So we aim to compete for the honour of being last with a genuine story that is technically good but not popular - a success d'estime (which means it bombed at the box office but the critics liked it).

We feel every vote and every comment personally. Give us a 1 vote and we bleed. Criticise our story and we're wounded.

Being British I try to keep a stiff upper lip when the rating of one of my stories drops below 3.00. If I were Japanese I'd be sharpening my sword to commit harikiri. (But I can't. I've been dead for thousands of years. Cutting my stomach open is impossible because even my bones have turned to dust.)

One thing about entering the Earth Day contests, and the other Literotica themed contests, is that your work is noticed, is read and gets comments - far more than for any other story you might post on Literotica. Entering is worthwhile for the publicity. If you don't win, next time you can try to write a better story.

My advice to anyone hesitating is "Go for it. The attention will be good for you."

Second entry is up

My second contest entry is posted.

Energy Saving is longer but only 3000 words and less than one lit page.

The number of entries is growing and the overall quality seems better than last year but I hope more AH people will enter.

Perhaps I had better finish my secret weapon - the stinker that will sink to the bottom of the list and stay there.

Regards to all

Og

Another shock.

Some have guessed, but I've come clean in Shock Chick aka Katie's thread.

Jeanne d'Artois is Og, so I have already got three entries posted for Earth Day.

Happy April Fool's Day.

Og and Jeanne d'Artois

Well, my entry for Earth Day 2004 is submitted.

I invite you all to look for "Pussy Willow" which should hopefully appear in a few days.

Energy Saving is losing energy

The voting on 'Energy Saving' is dropping the rating.

It is now well below 4.00 and falling. The public comments on it and 'Hedgehog Feud' are appreciated. Thank you.

Perhaps I don't need to write 'the stinker'.

If you haven't submitted your entry get it in soon.

I'm going to try to read and vote on all the entries (except my 3) tomorrow.

Loved the title
loved the story more.

Thanks so much everyone for the great feedback! As authors, you can appreciate how much it makes the difference. :) Especially to someone such as myself who hasn't put up something new in a long time. :)

It's in there! (like Ragu)

Well it's up...

Consummate Conservation

...crossing my fingers. Virginal contest entry. ;)

p.s. It's nice to know there's a contest on either end of the spectrum. If it's great then great. If it's gnarly then great. Hoping to compete on either end. :D

Your there? Hooray!!! I'll have to check it out.
wwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhoooooooo

New competition

Ok Og here I come. Last place it is. You may need to write that stinker yet. :-] Have fun I know I am.

No sleeping bag sex or fucking around the old campfire for me, I'm afraid. I decided to take a big leap and let out a bunch of ideas about sex and the earth and how they're related in kind of prose poem called "The Pillar in the Garden". The only category it would fit in is "Essays and Reviews".

It won't do well, but for once I really don't much care. This is easily the most personal thing I've ever posted to Lit, and the most radical, but as I say in the piece, it's all true, and when you write the truth, what do you care about opinions? Well, I guess I do care about opinions, actually. I'd love to get some feedback on it.

IS IT JUST ME?

If some of you would be so kind, I feel the need of a contest numbers comparison session.

My Earth Day Story, "Towering Passion" first saw the Lit light of day on 3/30. Since then its gotten less than 1650 views. For a contest story in the "First Time" category that seems unusually small. I'm also getting hammered in the voting: 16 votes (which seems like a lot for that number of views) with a 4.00 average.

Quality of writing (or lack of the same) aside, those seems like strange numbers. Any commentaries, compassion, or comparisons will be appreciated.

Well last night I was 4.59 with 38 votes, this morning I'm 4.42 with 40 votes and 3316 views. I will commiserate with you RF, looks like I'm living up to my reputation.

I think people are much too hard on contest entries, especially when most of us are amateurs. Amateur whats I don't know.:)

As of now:

Energy Saving posted 1 April

Rating 3.88 Votes 33 Views 3433 Comments 5

Hedgehog Feud posted 30 March

Rating 4.20 Votes 30 Views 4849 Comments 6

I'll come back as Jeanne and give 'her' score.

As promised above:

Pond Clearing posted 29 March

Rating 4.30 Votes 67 Views 10913 Comments None

My story "Pussy Willow" has a current vote of 4.54 with 50 votes submitted and 8978 views. I've received 5 public comments and about that many emails.

That seems like a high number of views to me in relation to the votes.

But since I haven't posted a story in a long time, I have no idea how these numbers compare.
