Asked Laurel about that very question. She replied that they have a computer program that does clean up. They run it periodically to remove cumulative votes from stories. When you lost votes if your score went up they removed extra votes that were voted low for some reason. If tour votes went down and your score went down, they removed extra votes from readers trying to help you. They did this to the entire site not just the earthday contest. The results for me were surprising. Several of my stories gained a point or two and several lost a point or two.

I think the program must have a glitch then. One of my stories only had four votes, and now it is down to three. I highly doubt that any of them were duplicates. Also, some of my poems were brought down to zero votes. Even if there were duplicates (which I doubt seeing as how there were very few), the orignal vote should have been left.

I read pixiejuice's story... it deserves to be up there! A very good read! Of course, I've always been partial to the romantic stories, myself.

You have to chase them all down in the toplists, if they're not in the top lists then I don't think you can find out.

The list on the actual contest is rotated regularly.

I have old stories that went haywire with the clean out... the earth day one... I honestly had a decent rating and then I must have had like 2 or 3 1s and bye bye

and to answer the how do I know rating question

go to the actual category a story is in... find the story in its category... it has the current rating right next to the author's name

Ain't it the truth pixiejuice? It's almost the kiss of death to mention having a decent score. The single digit IQ trolls will work themselves into a frothing lather rushing over to the contest site to lay a one on that story.

However, Joseph and Bizkit are definitely the leaders in the fight for the coveted last place slot.

Sorta depressing, the last five votes killed me because until then I had a 4.88 shurgs on the Earth Day with the Gods story. It is in my mind a beautiful story and I am not sorry that I wrote it.

The scores are fun. But they change so quickly, following them too closely is a not-very-productive form of self-flagellation. In a recent contest, I was in contention until the last day or two when quality finally rose to the surface.

Which reminds me, I've just submitted a second Earth Day Story. It's a Romance tale, Handling Things in Central Park.

Unlike most of my stories, this one is NOT fiction. Only the character's names and the POV have been changed to protect the author from divorce lawyers.

I'll pass along a warning when it's posted.

Has anyone been getting a lot of votes in the last day or so? It seems like the votes on my story haven't moved in over a day. Still 56 votes. But I've had over 10,000 views. How many views is common on a story, do you suppose?

Well it was climbing up slowly again this morning and someone went through and tanked it yet again so it dropped. Someone PMed me and asked if I thought it was other author's from the contest going through and tanking stories that were doing well. All I could say was I really hope not.

Giving fellow competitors a '1' would jeopardise my chance of coming last.

As we have discussed so many times, there are trolls out there who do vote a high scoring story down. I don't think those trolls contribute to the AH but they might be lurking.

Trolls can be the best friend of contenders for last place dis-honors. My problem is, having just come off the New list with a score of 4.28 on only 18 votes and 2200 views, it looks like I'm doomed to being mired in a morass of mediocity.

Maybe we a contest for fewest views and votes. Then I'd be a contender.

I'm with you Ogg, the lowest score I ever give is a 4, if I don't like it I won't vote. I'm usually low in contest scores because I write more non-erotic lately.
