Isn't each "troop" actually a soldier?

That's always been my undertanding anyway, but I could be wrong. If I am, set me straight, but prove it. Don't just tell me I'm wrong.

If "troops" are soldiers, then why can't they be honest and say soldiers, and not make it sound like many more than they actually are sending to war.

A troop comes from the old cavelry. A troop consisted of, usually, a company of men.

Soldier is an individual! Soldiers can mean a squad of men 7-9 men.

So to answer your question Troops=many companies of men, while Soldiers is less than a company of men.

troop is more neutral than soldier.

The Army has soldiers.

Air Force has airman.

Navy has sailors.

Marines are Marines.

The Army is an Army of One!

The Airforce Flys high! With marijuanna who dosen't? Need I say any more?

The Navy.....well 200 men go to sea for 6 months and return to port with 100 couples!

Marines.....well they only need a few good men to lead them.

God loves the Marines! They keep Heaven full of fresh souls!

Don't ever call a Marine a Soldier, don't ever call a Soldier a Marine.

I think "nerve gas" sounds more menacing than "troops" & "soldiers" combined.

Nerve gas is a fear.... we just need to hope the Soviets didn't give the Iraqi's the formula for the spray that dissolves rubber and synthetics. (designed to destroy gas masks)

Troops and soldiers sound equally menacing, I have to say.

Marines also seems pretty rough.

As for sailors and airmen, if I heard they were occupying my town I'd probably start a barbecue rather than hide. My best friend is a discharged seaman y'know.

Marines are the ones called leathernecks right? or is it jarhead? I get them confused. They're still fun to screw with being a navy brat myself.

I think just the opposite. "Troops" sound like dumb grunts. "Soldiers" sound like professional killers.

To me:

"Troops" sound like massive amounts of men about to stomp any resistance into the ground. They just keep coming.

"Soldiers" sound more specific - killing machines.

As a former Cav Scout, I prefer "Trooper"....

Knowing the meaning of soldier, I consider it a slight to me.

Gold Solidi, one-ounce coins that were used by the Romans to pay mercenaries and from which the word "soldier" is derived.
