I was at a friend's house the other day and noticed that she has a theme for each room. The living room is lighthouses, the bathroom is cutesy little fish, her bedroom has birdhouses and the kitchen is apples.

Now, my kitchen sort of has a theme...but every room in the house? I don't think I could be so coordinated....I mean, I'm lucky that my end tables match each other and the curtains don't clash with the couch.

So I guess I'm curious...do you decorate your house this way? Should I hurry up and have a Home Interiors party and get my house up to par?

I have a theme.

Every room is a parade.

One is dust bunnies, the next is laundry, the next is paperwork... it goes on and on.

Kitchen is done in Coca Cola (somewhere there is a thread on here with pictures)

My bedroom is done in Coca Cola

My daughters room is Winnie the Pooh

The laundry room (when it's finished) will be red and white.. with chrome accents.

Bathroom, living room and spare room is color coordinated.. but not done in any sort of a "theme".

I tend to gravitate toward themes, I guess. I like my furniture to fit with the other furniture--and the decorations just kind of followed along.

In my case, I have a lot of fifties and sixties vintage vinyl furniture combined with a sort of rustic cabin theme. Lots of wood panelling, wood lamps, a whole bunch of houseplants--that sort of thing. Don't know what you'd call it, but it works pretty well. People like my apartment when it's clean.

Never pointed out that I have Satanic light fixtures in my stairwell. Besides that, I avoid themes when decorating.

Well, since I live in this little apartment with three other girls, I don't have much space to call my own. My room is the smallest (the bad luck of the draw), and I share a bathroom with one of the girls, and we have a small kitchen and living area. We all contribute to the living area and kitchen decor, so there's Christmas lights, my lavalamp, a sarong on the wall, some paintings and posters, and candles. No theme there. My bathroom has an alien poster on the wall and a poster of France, as my roommate is from Rouen. My room... well, it's kinda the 'College Student' decor- posters of just about anything, cool quotes cut out of magazines adorn the walls, my artwork, and that of my artist friends finds places on my walls or ceiling, I have a photo wall, and a tack board filled with receipts, bills, important letters and assignments. My tiny desk is filled by my computer, and my dresser has that whole 'nicknack' idea to it: photo frames, jewelry box, printer, etc. Yeah. Oh, but I do have mood lighting: Christmas lights I tacked up at the top of my walls where they meet the ceiling. Hell of a lot better than fluorescent lights.

However, if I had my own HOME, and was allowed to decorate completely as I wanted, forsaking care of cost... I would thematize my rooms... or rather, colour sketch them. I have great ideas for when I have my own place... *grin* Everything will be either completely symmetrical or completely askew... lots of primary colours, and shades of black and white.... things like that.

By the way....thanks to everyone for not pointing out my stupid thread title typo.

I always have a theme.

At the moment Early Stone Age.

It's a nice cave really.

and some posts filled me with dread

(you have to read this sequentially people or it will make utterly no sense. Like a Burma Shave sign)

No, you shouldn't decorate for anyone but yourself, as your home is a refection of you. (Just as hers is a reflection of her.) Do what makes you feel good, and a good place to start determining what that is, is to flip through decorating magazines and make notations of what you like. You'll begin to notice a pattern developing.

I can't imagine themes in every single room, even though each room should be unigue. The most important thing is that the rooms all tie together, and don't look as though they all belong in a different house.:)

I decorate in a self styled "shabby chic/casual elegance" thing. I like for my home to be inviting and casually comfy. I use alot of color (my DR and LR both have "barn red" walls) flowers, candles, chenille throws, pillows, potpourri everywhere, and alot of photos and art. I have a few pieces of really nice furniture, a couple antiques, and the rest is an ecclectic mix of things found along the way. I go for simple things, I like it neat and orderly, but I also want others to feel they can put their feet up and kick back. I have made it a point to surround myself in what makes me feel good...the photos and flowers and potpourri, as well as the dishes and other treasures that I collect.
However, I don't have birds and fish and stuff all over the place.:)
