What is the difference between a canoe and a kayak?
I always used to think that you sat ON a kayak and IN a canoe, but now I know you can get kayaks you can sit IN.
I have a sit on kayak and an inflatable, sit in kayak.
So, what is the difference?
Do you need glasses?
I said it's a 2 seater canoe. I obviously was using one seat, and the other one is in front of me in the first pic.

Do You...Canoe?
I like the idea of being out on the water in a canoe or kayak. But as a practical matter, they don't look very comfortable and I really don't like the water.

You sit IN a kayak.
You sit (or kneel) ON a canoe.
To confuse you, there's something called a C1. It looks like a kayak, but you kneel in it and sit on it and use a canoe paddle instead of a kayak paddle (one blade instead of two). Techinically, it's a canoe, not a kayak. You can do a google search and see pictures of one.
...But...you definitely do not want to be out on open water in a canow and have a storm blow up...
Went on a 5 day caqnoe trip there once. We made it far enough out that we had our own personal lake. Not one other portager in sight. Just a loon.

One definitely wants to check the weather very carefully before setting out to paddle across a large lake. Then again, a paddle on a lake can be utterly delightful on a warm summer afternoon IF you happen to have a following breeze. We'd suspend a synthetic tarp[aulin] from a couple of paddles and just sail across the damn thing!
Some of those places are just fantastic. You're the only souls there and the sound of wolves howling at night is magical. There's nothing quite like it.

Typically, a canoe has no top decks. It is completely open on top and depends on it's thwarts (the rigid braces running from one side to the other) for structural strength.
A classic kayak has a hull that merges continuously into an enclosed top deck in both bow and stern, with a small cockpit opening in which the paddler sits or kneels. The inflatables and plastic sit-on-top kayaks you've experienced aren't really kayaks, but they are even less similar to canoes, so, they had to call them something, and since they are typically single paddler conveyances, the kayak label stuck.

You missed the C1.
I always thought a kayak was paddled with a double bladed paddle from a sitting position. Generally, the seat is on the bottom of the boat. Canoes are paddled with a single bladed paddle. In whitewater, one kneels in the canoe. In tranquil flat water like Turd was paddling, you can easily sit on the seats with knees up. The inflatables are duckies. You can get duckies that are made to be canoes or kayaks.

I love to canoe. You haven't really canoed until you've done it by moonlight. It's not for the skiddish, though. Lots of strange noises out there at night.
