I found a computer for a really good price, the only problem being is that it has no modem. I have access to another "shitty" computer with a modem. Can I take the modem out of one and put it into the new one? (I know that I can, but I guess the question is..will it work?) If it can be done, what are the steps involved in putting in a modem?

Yes you can... make sure you have the latest driver for modem

Take modem out of old pc
put modem in new pc. easy

Can I download the modem drivers from the net? Without breaking into the computer, I am not sure what kind it is.

depends on the software in the new one..

Modems are pretty interchangable.

Why not just buy a new modem?
It should come with sotware.

This is for my Aunt, and she has very little money to spend on the computer. I was trying to save her some money.

It all depends on whether the modem is "Plug & Play" or old enough that it has to have jumpers set to configure it. The modem also might be the wrong type to fit in the new machine -- most new computers don't have "legacy" ISA slots to install older components that use the old ISA buss.

A new modem can be found for under $50 that will have not only the installation software, but a warranty and Plug & Play capability to make installation simple.

IF the modem is plug & play and compatible with the slots in the new computer, then Windows should detect it and install it without needing any special drivers from the manufacturer -- Windows' generic modem driver will work for 99% of modems. Installing it is simply a mater of opening the cases and unplugging it from one machine and plugging it into the other.

WARNING: Be very careful about static discharge when digging in the innards of a computer. It doesn't take a discharge big enough for you to even feel it to totally destroy the motherboard or a circuit card! Always keep bare skin in contact with the case when removing and installing components.
