Calling all Asians

It is worrying times indeed.....I choose a perfect time to come to Asia for holiday :(

The good thing is that now the virus has been identified and more is know about it, that any suspected cases are being isolated quickly. Singapore have dealt with is especially well, although the Hong Kong government deserves a slap on the wrist for being so slow in dealing with it.

and the Chinese govt. deserves a kick in the rump for still being in a state of denial, and only coming out with some of the truth because of the power of the internet and international media......

but still the percentage chance of being exposed to this virus in this city of 14 million ++ are still much much less than being killed in a car accident, so we must keep things in perspective.

"Face" governs too much in the country... a Beijing friend of mine said that all these wonderful infrastructure projects in the city were all just "donkey shit" - shiny on the outside, but still shit on the inside..... interesting expression as I had never really ever inspected donkey shit before.....

here here for Window dressing!!

hong, although the chances of getting it may still be small, it doens't hurt to take precautions. Even in HK, with precautions now being taken, new cases are still coming out every day. It doesn't hurt to be a little more careful. Take care!

you are right Ask For More... just saw the BBC report on what is going on.. and the Stones cancelled their dates in China as well as Hong Kong.....and then we received precautionary warnings from the kid's schools as well....

we will be careful.

SARS

Hey AskForMore,
Hope everything is alright with you. Be careful out there. And if I were you, I would try not to get into the crowd ( I know it is impossible there). But I would avoid the hospitals or indoor malls like those in Kowlong Tong or Shatin. Hmmm not sure if places like Mong Kok or Tsim Tsa Tsui is safe as well.

The Chinese government is ruled by "face". Hong, you mentioned about the infrastructure project in Beijing. Do you know those nice supercrapers in Shanghai is "just look" as well? My dad was definitely "impressed" by the changes in Shanghai. And now he kept telling how in 2010 Shanghai would substitute HK etc etc etc. I kept insisting that Shanghai can have all the hardware, but the software, the system is what makes a city competitive.

Anyway, wish everybody has a nice weekend. It is snowing here !!

Thanks for your concern erc, my brother is a doctor and I already know all the guidelines and precautions by heart!

yeah, I have been wondering about crowds myself.

Well ERC, your Dad is not far off on Shanghai.... the city is pretty amazing as is Beijing these days. I am with you though on whether Shanghai would be able to substitute for HK by 2010.

Too much would need to change in 7 years... and it is not just software.... Shanghai people are very smart and savvy and internationalized, but systems, regulations etc. need a lot of change and institutionalized corruption needs to be curbed.

Hong Kong will still eclipse Shanghai as a financial and legal center for a long time yet what with its freely convertable currency and Common Law system, but in other areas of services, Shanghai may end up beating Hong Kong out as the Cantonese can be awfully provincial at times and Hong Kong is way overpriced from what you get. (though Shanghainese can also be very chauvinistic and actually terrible at managing relationships with other areas of China cause of their arrogance - a negative for regional HQ considerations)

The competition though really is Pearl Delta region and Yangtze River region when it comes to manufacturing and economic weight, and I believe that Shanghai and its hinterlands will eventually triumph (witness the migration of Taiwan investment from Guangdong to Jiangsu and Zhejiang).

Sorry for the rather dry post there my friends.

I too doubt that Shanghai will be able to overtake HK by 2010. China is still well behind HK in general, especially when it comes to standards of living. While its true that China is becoming bigger and richer, the attitude of chinese people really needs to change.

I run a chinese restaurant in London, its situated in an area with plenty of hotels so I get plenty of customers who are from China doing business in the UK, and I can quite honestly say that I have never met any other type of people who are so rude and are so lacking even in simple manners. Sometimes it ashames me to be chinese, because most of the people I see have no idea how to conduct themselves, and are extremely arrogant.

The good thing about china is that now more and more chinese are going abroad to study, and this can only improve the nation. If the new generation is more open minded, and more educated in western ideals, it will help China to advance at a much quicker pace.

Your comment about the Chinese government applies equally to Japan--and that is a country which has all the hardware, and the software is screwed up possibly beyond any hope of recovery.

Sheesh, don't get me started! Oh, you didn't; I did. My bad.

It certainly is getting scarier, we now have a 4th confirmed victim who has died!

I have never seen the asian mall parking lots so empty on a weekend before, restaurants are losing money, etc.

Enough of this dreary talk, who's gonna brighten this thread?

Oh and welcome to the new faces! :rose:

Hello from an Indian in the US :)

Hey, SensualMale--welcome to the thread. Just curious--do you ever feel that you get overlooked when folks use the term "Asian-American?" I had a friend in college who was barred from attending a meeting of Asian-American students (by a really stupid residential associate), even though he was from India--even after he pointed out that India is, yes, located in Asia!

Hope you make yourself a home here!

Hallo hallo Sensual Male.

Interestingly enough, the term "Asian" has become somewhat of a sore point in the ethnic community in UK. With a large population of Indians and Pakistanis calling themselves Asians, Asian has now come to represent only these two groups in the UK. Which is pretty annoying for the rest of us Asians who are being overlooked!

Love the av SW ;)

Thank you Roman!

I don't really care (yet!) about getting overlooked by "Asian American". I think they have another term now called "Indian American" these days. Stupidity and arrogance like the one you mentioned above does bug me at times tho', but what can you do with ignorant people going to school and still ignorant? :D

Asian is Asian, what else can it mean? Indian/Pakistani would be more specific. Oriental ... like someone posted earlier, probably means from the Orient. Not too much of a problem at my end, yet!

I won't doubt that Shanghai would become the focal point for the Chinese HQ. The potential is there. In 1900, Guangzhou(Canton) was THE place for chinese international trade, by the time of WW2, Shanghai had taken over. With its central location in transportation and population, Shanghai has distinct advantages that no other cities in China has.
Although I don't think 2010 would be enough for the Chinese government to overcome the disadvantages in regulation, and culture. 2050...... maybe.
Anyway enough with the dry talk....... though I do enjoy exchanging my thought with you guys. I am taking one week vacation to Las Vegas and the national parks there.... trying to recharge myself back to job search. Hope you all have a great week and take care.

Sensualmale, welcome here. Of course India/Pakistan is part of Asia. Hey even Iraq is part of Asia... hope you enjoy here.

Have a good holiday erc :)

On a sadder note, the prominent chinese actor Leslie Cheung commited suicide today
Perhaps best known for his role in the movie "Farewell my Concubine", he will be greatly missed RIP
