I don't want to open this can of worms, but it is instructive to understand that we have our freedom today in part because the farmers and storekeepers in America possessed sufficient weapons technology to defeat the most advanced military ground force in the West at the time, the British Army.

You make a good point. I guess the response is that the US citizenry possesses enough weaponry right now to invade Colombia and occupy Canada. If we shut down all sales of guns today, we'd still be the most heavily armed nation on earth, or close to it. The idea of us being invaded with the military we have in place is pretty hard to swallow. That was definitely not the case in the 1770's.


I don't really see any good argument to control gun sales/ownership myself. I'd like to see mandatory training--like drivers ed--for everybody as part of high school, a licensure process so we knew where they were and whose was whose, and truly significant penalties if your gun is used in a crime, but I realise that the majority of gun laws are pretty stupid and ineffective.

If parents fail to teach their children proper gun handling they should go to jail, every time. If parents fail to teach their children the rules of society they should be held responsible, every time.

I agree that criminals should not have firearms (but they do) and that small children should not have ready access to them either.

But on your last point, that would be difficult to prove or disprove in court. If your 30-year-old son commits a crime do you truly think that you should be held responsible? At a certain point, children may readily depart from their parents' teachings. Consider whether or not your parents would encourage you to join a porn site message board.

Also, there could be an instance where the parents consider firearms anathema and so would never consider versing their child in the proper usage thereof but the child, as an adult, purchases a gun.

Well, I don't think it's prudent to let a convicted armed robber have a firearm. I don't think they should be made available to small children. A license from the government indicates a privilege not a right, but along with every other right we have comes the responsibility to protect the rights of others. If one commits a crime he should go to jail, every time. If parents fail to teach their children proper gun handling they should go to jail, every time. If parents fail to teach their children the rules of society they should be held responsible, every time.

But Vetteman, that puts the responsibility on the parents and the child.

Everyone knows that people are not responsible for their own actions, society is responsible.
