I agree with you philosophically, and I think that the founders were probably concerned about the power of standing armies as a threat to the populace. On the other hand, the idea of any army, including our own, ever trying to occupy the US has always struck me as impossible, even absurd.
As a soldier, I can't even imagine the strategic and tactical obstacles to such a project. Think about even a relatively small state like Maine. There's no way you could ever do it.
Besides, you don't need much more than a 30-06 to defend your village. I can see BB's point about armor-piercing bullets and stuff.
