Anyone for a nightcap?

I'm opening my Old Stand By - Barefoot Pinot Grigio. I'm in a rut I think.

Try some Turning Leaf pinot grigio sometime. It's in the same price category as the Barefoot but a whole bunch better.

Really? I have always avoided Turning Leaf because it was in the pre-made gift baskets sold at Walmart one xmas.....yeah, i'm a dork!

I have ice cold water. I'd like something more exciting, but given the handful of painkillers I'm on, I doubt it'd be wise. I'll have to live vicariously through you!

Last night I had the following wines:

2008 Rosewood Estates Winery and Meadery VQA (Ontario, Canada)
Natalie's Sussreserve Riesling

2008 Rosewood Estates Winery and Meadery VQA (Ontario, Canada) Gewurztraminer

2008 Toasted Head (California) Barrel-aged Chardonnay

2009 Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages AC (France) Gamay

2009 Goats do Roam (Western Cape, South Africa)
Blended Red (Syrah, Grenache, Mouvedre)

2008 Kaiken (Mendoza, Argentina) Malbec Reserva

No I'm not a wino. I'm taking a wine course that the Wine & Spirits Education Trust (UK) puts on and each week we taste various wines in an effort to learn more about wine and tasting.

If anyone is interested in trying a variety of wines, or perhaps interested in what types of wines are part of a WSET wine course, here's last week's selection too.

Soave 2009 'Levarie'
Masi Agricola SPA
DOC Soave Classico, Italy

Semillon 2006 'Loan"
Tanunda Creek Vineyards
Barossa Valley, Australia

Gewurztraminer 2008

AC Alsace, France

Valpolicella Classico 2008

Barbaresco 2007

Feel free if you've tried any of these to share your comments on them.

Won't quote the whole thing, WW, but I love the name "Goats Do Roam." I bought a bottle of it last winter and enjoyed it immensely.

I've also had a few of the Toasted Head wines and liked them all.

Well smarty that you are you probably know that Goats Do Roam is a South African version of the French 'Cotes du Rhone'. It was news to me though. My question to you is could you smell/taste the stewed fruit, earthy animal tones of this wine? If you did, you beat me. :D

It was the third bottle we opened that night. I think I made a crack about tasting something goaty, though. :D

Now that I have a professional opinion, I shall buy a bottle and sniff for the stewed fruit (what - no precision about the actual type of fruit?) and the earthy animal tones (there's that goatyness!).

Having the last glass from the big box of Big House White. Next up is a bottle of Pacific Rim Riesling, which we'll crack open tomorrow most likely.

Big House White...uhuh...none available in the area. Picked up some Big House Red instead, but I hear now that it's not as good as the White. :(

hard cider, anyone?

I love hard cider. I am drinking Hardcore Premium Apple right now - it's ok. It really should be better for something called "Hardcore", right?
I really like Magners Irish.
Anyone have any other suggestions?

I drink apple cider. What is hard cider?

Can someone suggest a nightcap for a virgin hard liquor drinker (me)? All I know is I can tolerate vodka and whisky burns like a mofo.

Also, I can't drink before bed if I have to work. . . I don' t feel sharp.

Hard cider is fermented apple (or pear) cider. Alcohol content is around 5%, give or take.
You can find it generally in any liquor store, usually near the ales.
Some are really sweet (Woodchuck comes to mind), and some are more dry (Strongbow). But I haven't tried them all.
Ace is a good hard pear cider.
A word of caution: stay away from the Woodchuck Pumpkin Cider. Not good.

Thank you for this advice. I've never been a drinker, but I think I want to try a few new drinks this year.
