make a rose/thorn cane?

i have a wonderful long stem rose bush and i would love to make a thorned cane out of one of the branches, but i am not really sure how to dry it out or for how long. i would think that i could hang it like when i dry herbs, flowers or thisles (sp?) but i'm not sure. anyone have any info, or know where i could get some?

I am not certain, but I think that it can be dried just as you suggested.

In fact, I was thinking about doing the same thing myself. I have four rose bushes that I need to cut back before spring and I hate to waste those lovely canes. I am thinking that I can dry them in my spare bathroom.... hang them from the shower rod and all.

Let me know how it works for you....

i most likely won't be able to cut mine until spring either unless we get a good melt down here. i was put under the impression that the drying takes months but i shall see.

Rose wood cane!

I see no problme, would dry very well if kept out of the weather. But of course a kiln could dry it quite quickly if you know somone working in a wood mill close. How do you plan on using it? THere could be some interesting applications.

Fun idea.
Once again, I find myself limited in options due to my refusal to be held responsible for any living thing--even a rose bush. ;)

You could shellac (sp?) it.

I'm thinking your biggest problem is going to be strength. You might want to look into inserting something inside it to keep it rigid. Wooden dowel maybe. Rubber dowel (if they make 'em).

This may sound like a dumb question but, what is the diameter of a rose bush branch?

the thorns will be left on most of the branch except where it is stripped down sanded and dipped in tool dip for a handle. it will be use LIGHTLY, for scratching pricking rolling, it is a toy that needs to be used with great care because it breaks skin very easily.
i have around 20 rush bushes, 3 of which are long stem and 1 that is just differant that has long branches and 1,000,000 tiny thorns. depending on which bush i decide to use the cane could be from about ½ - 1¼ inch thick. strength really isn't a problem because the dried wood of a rose is very strong as long as it is taken care of (just like a ratan cane), i may put a coat or 2 of a poly clear on it.

Use material that has lignified

That is has hardened up and is not sappy and likely to be fragile and break down naturaly. This sort of wood would be lower in the stem and more abundant latter in the growing season.

To make something durable for the effect you describe you could also take a small piece of wood, dry it and holow it out so that you can insert a suitable ready made handle, fix it together with liquid nails or craft glue.

sounds like fun

You also might try braiding three of the smaller stems together and haning them in the attic to dry.
