You've probably all seen the Chevy Tahoe truck commercial, where actor James Garner (Rockford Files, etc.) reads this poem:
There's a place that I travel,
When I want to roam
And nobody knows it but me.
The roads don't go there,
And the signs stay home
And nobody knows it but me.
It's far, far away and way, way afar,
It's over the moon and the sea,
And wherever you are going,
That's wherever you are
And nobody knows it but me.
The style and theme reminded me of Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening, and I thought perhaps Robert Frost penned this poem, too. In my humble opinion, the above poetry seems THAT good!
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
by Robert Frost
Whose woods these are I think I know
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
So imagine my surprise when I did a google search and found that the poem in the Chevy Tahoe commercial was written by Patrick O'Leary.
Who?
Turns out that Patrick O'Leary writes advertising copy for the ad agency that developed this commercial for the Chevy Tahoe. So this great little poem was written FOR the commercial! I predict we'll hear a lot more great advertising poetry in future from this Patrick O'Leary. I think it's great that we have a poet of this calibre in the U.S., but it's a shame he's probably making MUCH more money writing ad copy than he ever could earn by being a "pure" [read "poor, starving, struggling"] poet like Frost was.
I wish Patrick O'Leary, whoever and werever he is, much success, and a lot more poetry like this.
Aloha from Patty
