750-words revisited

I didn't enter this year. I did one for the first go and it seemed to me that the readers, in general, simply do not understand the concept or the difficulty in the challenge — and vote accordingly. But, I did finally get my first Incest story in that one :D

Using "750 words about..." as the first 3 words of the description does not help. Commentors kept informing us they were "too short," nope, we counted, they were each EXACTLY 750 words.

And neither ended: "Her eyes were glazed over. He was panting, she was whimpering and...." ( words 739-750 inclusive.)

I was surprised

I had moderate success in the 2019 edition, and was expecting the same this year. Instead, I ended up with one of my better performers.

Both last year and this year are posted in LW. This year, with over 26k reads, 1800+ votes, 34 favs, and 54 remaining comments, this one far exceeded my expectations. The ebb and flow of what pleases the readers changes.

This is my 2020 750 word story

Charity - 4.10
Drew, Claire and Dominique - 3.95
Unwatchable Movies - 4.36

Overall, about what I was expecting it to be. I wouldn't say there was any major trolling either. Just readers who did not like the end product I presented. Most of the negative feedback is like "it was too short", "not enough details" and "more sex"

For that I have myself to blame. I did not pick three flash story ideas, but instead three ideas which could easily be 15K or 20K word stories themselves and tried to cram them into 750 words or show the climax scene of it, hoping the back and front stories can be inferred. Not a wise decision. I wasn't happy submitting either of them in their current form and will probably take them down some day and put them back up once they're proper 20K worders and not flash fiction.

Mine was a deliberately ridiculous story set in 1960 about a square and boring young man who is secretly homosexual. He spends his Saturday evenings at home studying, until one night when a mysterious cowboy arrives and teaches him about having fun.

It was in the Humor and Satire category, but it didn't do very well, less than 1000 views and a score of 3 from 13 votes.

I didn't expect mine to score that great, they didn't either. My one ever red h has not given me delusions of grandure. The one I thought was going to score better than the other, however did not and I think that is more or mostly about the sections they were in, because Sweet Dreams(Fantasy) is simply one sex scene, while Mail Order Bride(Transsexuals&Crossdressers) was me trying to stuff what would be a longer stories cliff notes in to 750 words. Oh well... live and learn. At least I tried.

I was pleased with the event because the stories were fun to write and to read. My three stories scored from 4.06 to 4.39, so below my average, but I expected that because so many readers don't like short stories. So, no disappointment on that score.

I think 750 words IS a bit too short for an erotic story, but it's still a worthwhile exercise. I think it helps one's writing skills.

I was bored a couple of weeks ago and ran a spreadsheet. My fourteen 750 word stories (counting last year's entry) have a collective 3.97 star average. My non 750 word average is 4.57.

So yes they turned out collectively lower, but I think they were a worthwhile exercise. I learned a lot about tightening up my prose (which tends to ramble) and a little about how to balance character development, plot and yes, sex.

The most puzzling score came from The Massage -- A 750 Word Valentine's Day Story. A story I posted in Loving Wives and which has a score of 4.2.

It has the highest read count, coming in at 15K views, even though it has a 750 word warning right in the title. And no bitches were burned.

That's an impressive score for a Loving Wives story with infidelity, so to speak. You got the usual Loving Wives style comments, which make great reading. If you'd reversed the genders, and the wife was getting a massage with benefits from a male masseur with husband's approval, the story would be in the 3s, not 4s. Gotta love those Loving Wives.

Yep, the men definitely have a double standard when it comes to fun times.

It is interesting, I forgot to note in the original post that at about 1K reads it was running a whopping 1.6 stars. I don't know if I should attribute that to the 750 word format or just Valentine's Day trolling.

Has anyone else noticed a sweep in their 750 story(ies) in the past few days? Mine’s lost a few votes and has jumped from 4.49 to 4.56 (71 votes left). Hopefully everyone else is seeing the same thing as some of of the one-bombs go bye-bye.

Until somebody posts about it and send the little critters right back ;)

I don't know if there was a sweep (I didn't pay attention to the number of votes), but two of my 750s made it past 4.5 finally. So, I did the kind of asshole thing, and blocked voting on them. Just those two, because they're such outliers.

Y'all can flog me if you want (pretty please?)

No, as I always say, sweeps don't seem to exist in my world. There have been no dramatic score changes in any of my stories.

Nope, haven't seen any sweeps on my 750-worders, either. But that was weeks ago--I'm off writing other stories. I'm not sitting on old ones, waiting for them to hatch and for a gold chick to pop out.
