Monster: Ed Gein

Fucking weird. Also, I never expected to feel such complex emotions as sympathy for a serial killer while watching this.

In the midst of a True Blood rewatch, and my partner and I alternate between Jeopardy and House, though we are almost finished with House.

This weekend, news commentary and some movies:

A second watching of Death Wish - the remake starring Bruce Willis, in one of his last 'full lead' movies. They kept the theme of the classic Bronson original, but this is much more personal, and stays on the trail of hunting down his wife's killers, rather than hunting random criminals (there's a little of that too). Great performances, suspense, and action when called for.

Bronson's Death Wish was fresh for the time, but (sacrilege alert!) I kinda prefer this one - it's more 3-dimensionsl an an admittedly 2-dimensional genre.

Next, a 2nd viewing of Killer Elite, which bears no resemblance to Peckinpah's 1975 The Killer Elite. With Jason Statham leading, Robert De Niro and Clive Owens in meaty supporting roles, they could have titled this anything - it didn't need the association. Great in every aspect!

Next was a true 'find' - a gem of a flick called Extortion. While some logic doesn't hold up well, the excruciating, gripping suspense makes that a blind spot. Low-budget, but every dollar was used well, scraping enough money together to include Danny Glover as a cop - so you'd at least recognize somebody in this movie. Excellent!!! Huge Thumbs up!!!

Next was Dobermann, a French Vincent Cassel crime flick, not quite saved by the delectable Monica Bellucci. If you must, go once for the action and gore, but this a fourth rate copy of the cool heist style of Soderbergh married to the clever banter of Tarantino (except the awful first 40 minutes of Death Proof) and fails at both. It gets annoying how hard they try to be cool.

Next, another great excuse for a Scott Adkins action flick, Diablo. It's got a bit of heart to go with the mayhem and gore. I like Adkins, and this was well worth the ride.

Loved Killer Elite. Great film

Yesterday, it was 3 movies:

A second viewing of the Tom Cruise Jack Reacher films, 1 & 2. Both great, but Cruise movies rarely disappoint. Love to see Rosamund Pike in just about anything.

Then a first viewing of Nic Cage's Ghost Rider 2 - Spirit of Vengeance. Great popcorn action fun, and nobody does 'over the top' better than Cage.

Today, 3 more movies:

1st watching of Stand Your Ground, a standard, low-budget revenge/mayhem flick, which is fine with me. Was surprised to learn that almost expressionless star Daniel Stisen was not another pro wrestler. The character motivations are barely 1 dimensional, but they spent their money on bullets and explosives, so I'm good.

First viewing of Inferno with Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon - the 3rd outing for the Da Vinci Code guy. Maybe the most exciting, because the awesome action was central to the story rather than a byproduct. Breathless suspense right to the end. Loved it!

Next, I revisited the original Da Vinci Code, which was great. Just about the only thing I remembered was the big reveal at the end. I don't know how they managed to make all the 'historic' gobbledy-gook' interesting, but it works.

Midnight Club on Netflix, looking to get into a spookier mood, but I gotta say (just my opinion) this one is the weakest of the series with Flanagan's name attached to it. I've saw all the others.

"Task" on HBO. It finished its run this past Sunday. Great story with multiple layers, great characters, and great acting from the main people.
