We use the term for every ugly statue on an old French building, but gargoyle, which comes from French gargouille translated as "throat" or "gullet" (also where we get 'gargle,' also originally from Latin, as all French is) is a water spout, meant to take water away from the building.

Non-water spigot ones are called grotesques. I have a couple on my deck. Yes, I said DECK, you pervs.
