❌Monthly Song Challenge: Archived🎵

Day 1: A song that makes you feel hopeful
Frank Turner - Get Bettter

Day 2: A song you’ll always sing along to
Pretty much any song for which I know the lyrics... and that's a ridiculous number of them. Similar to what the lovely lady of the thread stated about herself, far too much of my brain's information storage capacity is taken up by song lyrics. And my lack of a decent singing voice doesn't stop me. So, to pick one...

The Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton: An American Musical - Satisfied

Day 3: A song you love that most people haven’t heard from a popular band/artist
Florence + The Machine - Lover to Lover

Day 4: A cover song that you heard before the original
Well, @NRJLIVES4ever already took my first song 😊 so...

Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee (originally recorded by Roger Miller)

Day 4: A cover song that you heard before the original
Wow I just learned a ton of these we're not covers - thank you.
Everybody Knows - Concrete Blonde

Original by Leonard Cohen (also very good)
Hahahah this was almost on my list but then I recalled it was the exact opposite, I’d heard the original on the Pump Up the Vilume soundtrack and then was so disappointed that that wasn’t the version on Bloodletting. Which has since grown on me, but the OG is still the best.

Day 4: A cover song that you heard before the original

In the mid/late 80s, I hardly listened to the radio so never knew this was a cover. It was at the time 7 Seconds was changing their sound from hardcore to more “melodic.”

I remember getting this 12” ep and thinking, “What the fuck is this?” Then one of my friends explained…

99 Red Balloons - 7 Seconds

I think @morelikeasong has created some perverse incentives here and y’all just wanna get spanked 😝
Oh goodness. I know I need to follow this chain back to see what nonsense is going on but I haven’t even had one fucking cup of coffee yet and it’s already 2pm.
I’ll be back later to take care of these miscreants.

I'm going to skip the entirety of Metallica's "Garage Days Inc." album in which I heard nothing but covers before I found out they were all covers...

I'll instead drop Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" which I didn't not find out was a cover until about 7 years ago

Try versions by Shades Apart and by Imelda May.

Concrete Blonde did the cover on Pump Up The Volume, which is where I first heard it & is on the soundtrack. It was a while later when I started listening to Cohen that I realized it was a cover originally written and done by him. It is not on the Bloodletting album (unless it has been remaster) but you did just get me to listen to Tomorrow Wendy (which I also love - as sad as it may be)

They did not do the song in the movie

But you are correct that their version was on the soundtrack not bloodletting.

And Tomorrow Wendy is also a great song and cover that has grown on me though I still think I prefer Andy Preiboy’s version slightly more. 😁

And again I learn - I did not know Tomorrow Wendy was a cover!
Funny as I was writing I was trying to recall the movie, as I didn't recall Concrete Blonde but I pulled out MY CD and there it was on the soundtrack. But I also knew thats where I heard it 1st.

OK, looks like fun...

Day 1: A song that makes you feel hopeful

I'm a sap...seven minutes of Leonard Cohen pouring his soul out

Day 2: A song you’ll always sing along to

I miss Jimmy Buffet. What a life! Not a great singer or anything, but he wrote the hurtin-est country song of all time...I keep Radio Margaritaville on in my truck...and sing this at 104dB

Day 3: A song you love that most people haven’t heard from a popular band/artist

Sister Morphine from the Stones (There is some discussion about "popular", but c'mon, they are still touring, with a collective age of what, 500?)

Day 4: A cover song that you heard before the original

Lots. Hurt by Johnny Cash (long before I heard NIN's version). All Along the Watchtower by Jimmy Hendrix (Bob Dylan wrote it) ink Cadillac Pointer Sisters) and Blinded by the Light (Manfred Mann) both written by Bruce Springsteen. But believe it or not, thanks to a roomie at University with great weed and better records, I heard this version (or one like it) first, so its always been a JJ Cale song to me
