While I agree there are some Kanaka who want the Monarchy restored, there are others who believed if it wasn’t colonized by Americans, it would’ve been by Russia or Japan. I personally don’t see how any outside countries had any right to overthrow a sovereign, recognized nation.

It isn't a matter of what was then. They voted to become a State...and it wasn't a close vote. But what I am saying is they have not...in their eyes...gotten what they thought they would get from that choice. It doesn't really matter if their view is right or wrong...it just is. We are dealing with how Hawaiians view the US. It isn't favorable. I can tell you from my time there, there are people seriously looking at the economics of how to proceed. I don't see them reverting to Monarchial state again. But I can very much see them leaving the Union.

You're tipping your hand here. No one in the Democratic party was taking Hawaii for granted in 1959, when it was expected to be a heavily Republican state (that's why it gained statehood concurrently with Alaska, which - believe it or not - was expected to be heavily Democratic). In its first presidential election, HI very nearly went red; only a recount tipped it to Kennedy by about 100 votes.

And whether you mean it this way or not, "the Democrats are taking you for granted" is a very popular rallying cry on the right for sowing discord among Democratic constituencies. Almost without exception, the people saying that have no intention of doing anything whatsoever for the constituency in question; they just want them to stay home and not vote.

Gabbard should not be written off too soon. She is only 41 and given that the USA nationally, is substantially a gerontocracy on both sides of politics, there is plenty of time for her to re-emerge in some sort of role in either National or local politics. In any political system there is always a conservative wing sometimes 'establishment,' sometimes populist, occasionally democratic. There will be room for her, but maybe not for 10 to 15 years. Some of you guys need to take a longer view than just the middle of next week.
