With the onset of summer, and warmer weather (in the northern hemisphere at least) the topic of outdoor sex arises, perhaps echoed in the National Nude Day contest. I ran across this passage in the novel 'Mating.' Female protagonist, male author, setting southern Africa:

‘The idea of making love al fresco was suddenly to be discussed … but it was my duty to point out that outdoor love was not a good idea. ... Pastoral sex is exclusively a male penchant. I guarantee no woman ever proposes it if there are quarters available.’

What do you think of this? Outdoors certainly has fantasy elements, with heightened excitement for a variety of factors, and depending on circumstances sometimes remains the only option. Does this perspective resonate?

It's certainly not true for every woman, but as generalizations go it may not be too bad.

That won't keep me from writing it--especially if "outdoor" is in a civilized place like a poolside patio.

Sex in a tent on a camping trip is the closest thing to "outdoors" that I can testify to. It's...sex.

As a fantasy, I wind up sticking at least one sex-in-the-water scene in every book. Sometimes it's an indoor shower but there's usually something in a pool or on a beach. Maybe it's just the appeal of writing an outdoor scene of any kind.

Beach sex seems as if it would be particularly fraught with challenges - in reality. Works fine in porn.

Of course, sex in the water is supposed to be an open invitation to a UTI.

Outdoor sex can be very romantic, if you can be sure you're free of mosquitoes, poison ivy, sand and thorns.

Oh, and people. Despite the porn meme, many if not most women don't want to be seen en flagrante.

Another real world issue is cleanup afterwards. Good sex is messy and it's generally the girl who gets messiest, so to speak.

But a private place, with a soft surface (not much fun underneath with a sharp rock in your kidneys), sure. Birdsong, running water nearby, stars overhead, flowers - it can be very romantic.

I remember reading that novel a long time ago. It's written by a male author, Norman Rush, but narrated in first person POV by a female anthropology graduate student, who's never named.

I think there were times when Rush went out of his way to make his narrator express points of view that distanced her from what Rush thought of as the male point of view, perhaps to make her seem more authentically female. He also made her a very quirky and idiosyncratic character (as was the male character with whom she entered into a relationship). This seems like one of those opinions, to me. Rush, as an author, didn't want readers to feel he was just projecting his male fantasies through his female narrator (something that male authors of erotic stories, including me, often do).

I don't think the statement is true. It might be that more men than women want outdoor sex, but I think there are plenty of women who want outdoor sex. The general rule, I think, is that for both men and women nearly every possible point of view is represented and the variety of sexual kinks and desires is nearly infinite.

They even named a drink after it.

Based solely on my experience at music festivals, outdoor sex is common enough that I think the generalisation is a touch too broad.

Bingo, and not just the giant out door festivals. I had sex in an alley next to the Living room( the original one in the bubble complex for any other Rhode Islanders out there) and she was the one who grabbed my arm and said lets go...on the way out of the alley we slipped past another couple going at it.

Good times in the....80's shit, I'm getting old.

Worth mentioning I know a lot of prissy men who would scrunch their face up at sex outside.

Also, men seem not to know that soap burns.

The Eighties, that great asterisk in human history when "this is a good idea" was applied to everything that wasn't. There were shirts in my father's closet that...

Edited because I'm not going to waste my fucking time.

Maybe that would make a cool t-shirt.

Yep. I'd say challenges! Sex on the beach hurts. Wet, sticky, friction, tight spaces and sand makes for painful, uncomfortable intercourse. Penile sandpaper.

Give me sex in a Jaccuzzi or a pool any day. And as you mentioned, a tent. (My wife and I have an RV. Sex in an RV is great!! Better than hotel sex.

I have a story, not on this site, where a couple has sex in an abandoned, roofless railroad station because it's the only place in Orchard Beach/Pelham Bay Park where they can find any privacy on Labor Day weekend. It's a bit rushed, and for the woman, not particularly satisfying. (They have to do it with both standing up and her facing away from him, propped up against a wall.)

The place really existed once on the Amtrak line, but it hadn't been used in decades. For those keeping score at home, it was called City Island Road station.

Does this really count as outdoor-sex? (Even if the roof is gone, it seems like it's not really what most would think of as outdoors.) Just wondering aloud...

First of all, I was wrong. It is on this site as part of the Bronx Park East series. https://classic.literotica.com/s/bronx-park-east-ch-06

I was in there once, maybe fifteen years ago - without a girl, however! There was a large open, roofless space that must have been the waiting room once. There were all kinds of plants growing through the floor. To me, it felt like being outdoors.

All I think about when writing about outdoor sex is the mosquitos and how I would itch all over the next day. Of course I don't put that in the story.

True. It does feel a bit like outdoors, doesn't it? Technically, not sure. It's like sex in a barn... it feels like outdoors, but is it really? In either case, if the sex is good, then I say write it and they will cum. ;):D

Well, barns, if they are not abandoned, have roofs. This station didn't have one, plus all the windows were knocked out. When one stood in it, there was a view of the entire sky above. The waiting room had been fairly large, so there was quite a bit of open space.

A more recent photo of it shows that it is really going back "into the ground." I think I saw it around 2000, and the walls were still intact. It was last used in 1931 when the New Haven railroad abandoned local service. The Northeast Corridor of course is still very busy with through trains to Boston. If Amtrak ever gets its act together, they will probably remove the last of it.

There have been plans to restore four local stations on the route, but City Island Road is not one of them. I guess it could work if there was a bus shuttle to Orchard Beach, but that would be a summer-time-only operation.

Simon is astute in his analysis of the characters in ‘Mating’ (and I am impressed with his memory.)

Some of the discomforts of outdoors have been mentioned, also the ‘not-quite-outdoors’ (abandoned roofless buildings, tents.) There is certainly something arresting about hearing noises from a nearby tent on a camping trip that can only be the result of arousal and consummation from the people inside. Hard not to see the folks the next morning without imagining what went on the night before…

The lure of outdoors is powerful. I had to go back and look and was surprised to find 20% of my stories had alfresco sex, a few the entire story set outside. (One romantic partner plucked a sprig of lilac to set next to his lover’s head while they copulated on the (moonlit) grass.)

The outdoor music festivals also add a huge dimension – anytime you have music and dancing and people are outside and away from normal settings, the arousal index goes way up. I suspect a lot of good tales could be retold or recreated out of that setting.

For some unknown reason, I started reading romance novels around Christmas last year. Became hooked and have read over a hundred since. With an average of three sex scenes per novel, that's about 300 sexual encounters; not one happened outdoors. There was one romantic proposal on a beach and some intimation that were it not late and cold, sex might have happened, but not full out sex on the beach.

I report this because I believe women make up at least 90% of the readers of romance novels, and those suckers (the novels, not the readers) are so fine tuned to their audiences that if they demanded outside sex, they'd get outside sex. The other notable data point of those approximately 300 sexual encounters in romance novels; one oblique possibility of fellatio. Lots of cunnilingus, no fellatio. Certainly a different audience than those who read here, but I believe an insight into general female fantasy.

Having said that, my most recent ex-wife loved sex outdoors and the other too. She was a geologist though.

I posted a story about outdoor sex last year and was surprised to get comments complaining about the poison ivy, mosquitoes, chiggers, ticks etc if considering sex in the woods.

Apart from a few stray mosquitoes in the last few years, we don't have any of those in England - it's a green and pleasant land for sexual purposes.

I think many women would consider outdoor sex if it's private and comfortable and with an established partner, but the thrill of being caught is less common for women and with a new partner women are more likely to go for missionary position for the first time (you can see what the guy is doing, as in condom in place, aiming for correct hole, not trying to strangle you) - and lying on your back under the weight of a man tends to be way more comfortable in a bed than anywhere else.
