bought some luscious honey crisps today for eating... big, crisp, red/gold, and each bite tasting like autumn. the sort of apple i'd use for toffee apples.
(reminiscent of a cox's orange pippin)

of course, it goes without saying that granny smiths are the ONLY apple pie apple to consider -- unless y'all know something different and can persuade me of its merits!

Bramleys for cooking. Cox's for scoffing.
i'll give you bramleys but i don't see them in the stores here. and i KNOW i can rely on a granny smith (even if how they like their apple pies in this household would make most brits weep in frustration)

Honey Crisps for canning. Nice flavour and the peels/cores make nice jelly and, after that, excellent apple butter.

A mix of Pink Lady (when I can find them) and Granny Smith for pies. Sometimes I throw in some Golden Delicious and MacIntosh, finding the blend of tastes and textures especially fine.

Nice thread, BTW!

I'm a Royal Gala girl for eating - crisp and not too grimpy like Cox's

Not sure about cooking. I've used cooking apples for jams, but I'm not a big apply pie eater unless someone else has made it :D

I care not for apples unless they're in their natural hard cider form or if the woman who bakes for me bakes an apple pie for me.

I recently tried a snap dragon for the first time and it’s a new fave. Crispy and sweet, perfect for snacking.

never canned H.C's but i think we have used them for apple butter  pink lady's different over here to those i had in the uk... they're smaller and less champagne-y sorta kinda :(

"The Spartan is packed with flavour and is moderately acid. If you love crumbles, this is the apple for you."

I mainly just make Apple Crisp, so it works for me.
i think we used some of them for apple butter, too, though i thought them a little mealy in texture for an eating preference. I may well be mistaking the ones we used, though, since we got them from a localish orchard and bought a bunch of different ones.

grimpy :D you mean like in texture, or wrinkly-skinned? these honey crisp had the sort of flavour but were packed with juice in firm, crispy flesh. delicious

Royal Galas are nice. I’d forgotten about those.

grannies with pb? on their own or between something?
never tried it but i will!

Sliced into eighths , then dipped into the jar or a dollup of peanutbutter put on with a finger or a buttreknife tip full layered on.

Honey Crisp and Gala for eating.

There is no apple that tastes good if I bake the apple pie.

Mine are nice and crisp. But it could be the orchard or the freshness. We have a lot of orchards in the area.

I read that we will no longer have Macintosh. They were overpopulated and now they are killed off. Hmm

Back when I was a kid my grandpa's shop had a native crabapple in front of it. I loved their sour taste.

If anyone ever comes across Ambrosia apples, snatch then up!
They are like Honey Crisp and Fujis had a baby. Pretty sure Pink Lady is an aunt.

okay, i've resisted the urge all day but i can't anymore...

"how do you like them apples?"

i watch a lot of old movies.

This thread reminds me I need to get back into infusing booze again. Making apple gins and vodkas was pretty tasty. :D

was trying to find an "ultimate" apple list-chart...but these'll do, ah suppose

Fuji, Red and Gold Delish for me. I tend to side with the sweeters over the bitters.

There is a hybrid in Japan called Sekai Ichi. It's the most expensive apple in the world at $20 a pop. I would love to know what that shit's about, for that kinda money it best be reversing the aging process!
